Ninth Anniversary First Post Combo Breaker
    Hi,

I'm new to this forum but this thread is so inspiring I thought I'd jump right in. We got a new freezer earlier this year because there was never enough space in the old one - and this one keeps getting stuffed as well. (I cook huge meals so that I can freeze left-overs and have something ready on busy days.) I keep forgetting what's in the cupboard as well, so that might need some emptying too! As we're on a bit of a tight budget atm, I've decided to try and minimize the amount of money spend on food.

    So here it starts. :)

  • Do you use your local mill for flour? I use Shipton Mill flour and weirdly the bread I bought in the IOW although sometimes using the IOW flour they used Shipton Mill too. I feel guilty buying bread as I usually make it but do get the odd loaf if tired/busy etc - I had the Island Bakers walnut and rye bread when I was there - lovely! There's an artisan bakery in Cowes I'd like to find too. Never seen Jackson's bread in Waitrose but I rarely buy bread from a supermarket, more likely to be tempted and weaken if I see an individual bakers! Was impressed with their fields of crops - we walked cross country over the field footpaths, was extremely hilly.. growing season here is fairly long, not sure how theirs compares. I've picked lots this week including courgettes still but looks like first proper frost will hit Monday night here. Adding the sanctuary and lavender farm to the list - I saw that was just North of Arreton iirc. Did you go to Godshill? (think that was where I read about a lot of food places, organic farm etc).

Yes I do use our mill for bread flour but can be expensive but worth it.
oh yes we have been to all the best areas on the Island and Godshill is a foodie delight with lots to see and buy;)
Also they have cider farm, vineyards everything you can think of food wise but not tried the Artisan breadshop in cowes I will have to pop that on our list:-

I am not sure how there's compare to yours but it seems much longer and they are picking right up to end of November so I was told and plenty of Alotments in Cowes.

^ End of November is late, normally mid October here but first frost is late this year. I love the way it's redevloped itself as a bit of a foodie place. I did pick up the leaflet for a vineyard and will definitely go to Godshill then - my arms ached when I got back from everything I was carrying last time!

    Welcome lakme :)

    Usual yog/granola/OJ this morning.

I've made 2 loaves of fruit bread today, smells lovely as just out of the oven. It's a bit hot still so will use the rest of my last hm loaf for lunch instead, with IOW garlic butter and might fry up some tomatoes. Then will slice the fruit bread later, going to try and get some in the freezer if poss.

Had 100g beans soaking overnight - going to make Boston Beans later (or attempt to..) and have with omelette for dinner tonight.

Still need to make the orange syrup cakes as eggs are at end of bb date now.

Welsh Poppy and Kirri I can see the IOW from a hill about a mile away from here, the island is less than 15miles away but sad to say I have never been there.

Thanks folks for the extra ideas to do with apples.

    Freezer movements
Out: chicken livers to make some pate, one portion of apple crumble,
In: 4kg chopped leeks, a SM bargain. I use loads in soups so they wont go to waste

Just come back from SM spent £30.70p, more than I meant to but I don't need to go again this week.
Got 2 pumpkins for 10p each. No one seemed to be buying them, maybe it was because they were advertised as 'carving pumpkins' don't people realise they are vegetables and they will also store for a few months.

Went to the doctors this am, after they had written to me to take part in a regional weight trial. Loads of questions, measurements and blood samples taken, came back and logged onto the regional website only to be told I've been put back and have to wait 12 months. I'm a bit gutted - no: a whole lot gutted - as I saw this as a golden opportunity to lose weight after my recent bilat hip replacements, I'm more active now compared with before, but my knees are starting to ache and I know carrying too much weight is bad for me. Trying to lose weight by myself is so very very hard and I saw this as being a lifeline (please don't tell me to join weight watchers, slimming club etc - I can't stand their attitude/mentality)
  • Nothing bought this week, so far.

Out - Ox cheek - will be using veg to make a stew.

In - Surplus portion of Ox cheek stew for later in the week.

Oh you should pay a visit if you're that close, am jealous!
Good bargains with the pumpkins, I think most people only buy then to carve instead of use but I can make a good week's worth of meals from one and winter squash store so well just sat on the kitchen windowsill all winter.
Did they give you a reason for delaying the weight programme? A year is a very long time.. is there anything you can replicate from the programme at home?

Did you just go for the day?

Yes, unfortunately, so was quite a long day!
I did check a few pub menus online but didn't have time in the end but saw some lovely veggie options.

Went to cook lunch, started cooking the tomatoes then when I got the end of the bread out it had gone mouldy.. so had to scratch that idea. Waited for the fruit bread to cook down instead and had that.

As I'd partly cooked the fresh tomatoes I used them in the Boston beans recipe this evening, instead of the tinned ones I had in the cupboard. Recipe, for a first try, turned out really well, so tasty!! This will definitely be a regular thing I make from now on, recommend this. I've never eaten baked beans from a tin as they look very fake.. but had fresh cooked American baked beans and loved them and this was quite close to that.

I did obviously tweak the recipe as it usually contains pork. I fast boiled and cooked the beans earlier and once they were cooked the 'sauce' was a 5 minute thing, cooked the diced onions and added the cooked tomatoes from earlier, chipotle tabasco, molasses, mustard powder, white wine vinegar, maple syrup, salt/pepper, bit of butter, mixed it together and put the beans back in to warm up and get coated. Would have been a looser mixture had I used the tinned toms rather than the ones I'd cooked down earlier for toast..

Had it with a green chilli omelette. Looks bit messy but tasted good!

Got another large portion of the beans to use tomorrow. I may batch cook some of these for the freezer when I have room.
