  • Looool wp enjoy your something tasteless.

My mum was diabetic too, she died in her late 30's from related issues, so I'm also determined not to get it, she had it from childhood, it seems to be quite erratic in my family, my great aunt has it, my mum did, but none of her siblings do, my cousin has it, very strange.

I am having something healthy, I've decided I may as well be inventive, seasoned sea bass, it's not a very meaty fish is it? Stuffed with garlic and chilli kale the last of the pack, seasoned 5 beans, might have some rice, not too sure yet.

ms_night_ryder sorry to read about your mother that must have been awful for you (((((ms_night_ryder)))))

People are often told that Type 2 diabetes is caused purely by lifestyle which really annoys me but it can now be shown that you have to have an abnormality on one of ten chromosomes to be predisposed to get it. New research has found a gene abnormality too which can cause it. I think it's really unfair to blame people for their genes !

Cholesterol is found in all your cells and has loads of functions including converting sunshine to vitamin D. Your liver produces it but you eat it too in animal fats and plants have it too albeit in smaller amounts.

If you have high levels of LDL that's not good as it sticks to the artery walls. HDL is the good cholesterol so that's what you want. If a GP says total cholesterol is high, suggest asking what the HDL is like. ;)

However, the research upon which this whole fats are bad mantra is based is 40 yrs old or thereabouts and newer research is saying sugar is worse. So the cholesterol level might become less important with new research, it's kinda watch the news stuff.

I have diabetes and my cholesterol is excellent according to GP, if you have diabetes with high blood sugar though you can get high cholesterol because it stays in bloodstream longer. My GP is making me test my nlood sugar loads at the moment (my fingers are sore) and it's completely normal. I hope he will reduce my meds cos my blood sugar often gets too low now and makes me feel horrible :(

WP don't you get bored on treadmill ? And does it bounce as you walk ? Spuds  I haven't had a boiled potato since 2010.

Kirri.. beans.. IIRC the maple syrup is added to the beans when they are cooked.

I checked the print out.. there's a total cholesterol HDL ratio 2.9 and a serum HDL cholesterol 1.9  Is that the figure that is supposed to be the higher the better though?!

I didn't know there was some in plants, always read that vegan diets were cholesterol free. I don't want to give up chocs and cake etc.. as the rest of my diet isn't *that* bad..

All this health talk is putting me off my dinner!
best go and warm up my beans.
  • Kirri, she was actually only 33, it's been so long my brain gets fuzzy, I'm getting old! But as I have only 2 years until 33 I do wonder and worry, silly i know.

Anyway I'm having only the. Fish, can't be bothered with all the rest! Sorry for putting you off your food kirri.

Mayo Clinic website has both US and European&Canadian cholesterol figures. (US does mg/DL Europe & Canada mmol/L)

Kirri it says below 5.3 mmol/L is desirable for Total Cholesterol and that 1.6 mmol/L and above is best for HDL. So it looks like yours is fine ;) To work out your LDL though, you need to know your Total, HDL and Triglycerides as well.

There is cholesterol in vegan food but it would be measured in milligrams not grams. So you wouldn't get much at all.

Forgot earlier.. the Rose Elliot Low Carb cookbook uses a lot of subs for things rather than changing the way the reader cooks. Personally I don't want to eat stuff like xylitol or low carb bread full of additives.

    IN freezer

    Morrisons organic salted butter

Total cholesterol was 5.6, triglycerides 0.7, LDL 3.4 - so total not that bad (would have been ok before they changed the ok limit!) but it's gone up a lot and diet not changed really, if anything it's got better as I've cut the fake meat this year.

Shame about the RE book then, bit disappointing using additives/replacements in a cookery book.

Zafiro - HFW was cooking with apples again earlier - though mainly consisted of feeding them to his poor pigs to improve the flavour :(

MNR, not you, just in general I mean! In the end I had corn on the cob, beans, egg and a tofu sausage..

Yes, just chop it in to bits ready to throw in to a soup or casserole. I have never tried just eating it after I have frozen it but it looks fine as if normal. I might try it next time just to see if you can.

I have just put it in the slow cooker as Asian style beef casserole. A large joint of beef, 3 different coloured peppers, spring and white onions and broccoli, garlic and ginger and celery. Then I added 200ml of beef stock with a good dash dash of soy sauce and a pinch of chilli flakes.

I am hoping to use the left over beef in wraps tomorrow night following a recipe on the grocery challenge thread:)
