"There is no point in getting married if you're not having kids"

Why do people say this? It annoys me. It's always parents that say it.
Marriage is a symbol of commitment between two people, a partnership, and also leads to cheaper car insurance according to my insurer
So on the basis of not wanting children, why shouldn't I get married?
Any thoughts.

People who say this are usually ignorant of the legal protection that marriage affords, quite apart from the emotional reasons for marrying.0

Of course you should if you want to. Marriage is for love, unity, belonging, show commitment, millions of reasons, quite apart from not wanting to have children.0 -
Marriage is nothing to do with having children. It is also nothing to do with religion. But most importantly, it is nothing to do with anybody else!:)0

It's totally ridiculous to say that if a couple aren't going to have children then marriage isn't needed.
Marriage is about so much more than just children. :mad:Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

no idea - no-one has ever said, either to me or around me, that theres no point getting married if you're not going to have kids together. Thats a new one on me .0 -
My OH and I have been together 17.5 yrs and we got this constantly. I was only 16 when we got together and was not emotionally, financially ready for children.
I was told I was selfish, nasty and childish to stop my OH having a heir (like we are millionares!!) It is NONE of their business. My brother & sister plus my OH has 4 other bothers/sisters who all have kids.
So what happens to all those unfortunate people who cant have kids due to medical conditions? Does that mean they are unworthy to marry? Who decides who should have kids just because you wear a ring? People middle age beliefs being pushed onto a modern era really really annoy me!!!!
Sorry rant over, guess after several years of having to hear this rubbish from people it still manages to push my buttons!0 -
One the last "loving" things my Mother said to me was "well I don't see why you are bothering as you're not going to have children", not spoken to her in 5 years now....best years of my life so far married to my lovely hubby and no there will be no children but we knew that before we married (I can't) but it makes our marriage no less special and meaningful to us.0

I have never heard it said, but it is clearly ridiculous.0
