Sadly off the mark there, the legal aspect of marriage only appeared to solemnise the religious aspect as society was being organised in a lawful way. Now whether which aspect has more calling power in society today I am not disputing, but just wanted to straighten your 'facts'. :D

That may have been the case in history. But marriage is now a civil matter. As I have said, there is no religious aspect in marriage per se. It is expressly forbidden in the register office in any form. If people wish to add an optional aspect by going off to church they may do so.

    So that's the facts straightened.;)

As Imp points out, the law is very much based on Christian culture and a marriage is the only type of contract which incorporates religious culture per se. Nothing optional about it, the only non-religious option you have is to not get married at all. Once again, facts v. beliefs.

I've never heard anyone say this OP. I know many couples that are married and have no children by choice.

    Just ignore them.

It might seem so too, if my dislike of christian priests blinkered me to the reason for being of an important legal and social institution. :T

I've been married 32 years, and have no children by choice.

In all that time, no one has asked why we bothered to get married. If they did ask, I wouldn't have dignified the question with an answer.

    I don't dislike any Christian priests, but then I don't know any!

Marriage is an important legal and social institution, I would agree. But it is not important in a religious context, since religion is no longer relevant to how we conduct our society. It is an ancillary interest pursued by a minority.

Holding a wedding in a church is not really different from doing so in a hotel, a football stadium, on a cruise ship or at the top of Blackpool Tower.

Why do people say this? It annoys me. It's always parents that say it.

Some people just like to hear the sound of their own voice and don't care what rubbish they come out with next. My advice is not to concern yourself with, or be so affected by other peoples opinions. The more you approve of your own decisions and views in life, the less you feel the need to have them approved or accepted by others.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

You need to get out more. Open your eyes, you are being blinded by your anti-religious bigotry. Marriage quite clearly is important in a religious context... otherwise religious marriage ceremonies would not exist.

Again, your opinion, and not one shared by millions.

Funny then that the vows are suspiciously similar whatever the physical setting. I agree with Gloom&Doom.

    (Answer)
Is that the only reason you got married then??

Or feign bursting into tears saying 'we've been trying to have children for 10 years!!!' That should shut the nosey beggars up.

(Though l never had the courage to do that in all our years of ttc)

    Happy moneysaving all.
