I thought this was taking the Michael a little bit, then ! watched this on the BBC - "hotel of mum and dad"

"In the Scottish Borders are Andrew and Jordan, who have been together for a year. They live in a crowded house with Andrew's parents and siblings. Andrew is desperate to move into their own place, but Jordan thinks paying out all that money on rent will ruin their social life. With a drinks bill between them of around £800 per month and only £80 per month going out on rent,"

I was flabbergasted when they admitted to an income of £1600 a month, but only paid £80 for food, laundry and cleaning...

Back in the early to mid 90's I was paying my parents £50 a week and I thought that was quite reasonable for back then. I'd imagine £75 to £100 a week would be somewhere about right.
  • wow - i seem to have offended a lot of people by this post - this was not the intention, I genuinely did not think i was being disrepsectful or cheeky by offering that amount and all i wanted was a yes thats ok, or no thats not enough - i really didnt expect a bashing to go along with it.

I've been through a very rough time - i wont bore you with the details but thats the reason i moved back home.

I don't have any choice but to do my own washing - this is what my mum wants so this is what i do.

The water is heated by the wood fire -not practical for all year around i know but not my house.

The reason i go around turning things off is becuase this was one of the things my mum was moaning about that she thought the electric bill was rediculously high - was just trying to help, dont see why turning the tv off thats left on all day long with no one watching it is a bad thing.

My mum works - so no one is home all day but all the electricals are left on.

I have offered to buy an energy monitor as mum thinks the tv and computer being left on all day and night wont have contributed to the high bills, but again she wants to reduce these bills so only trying to help.

I asked how much she wants me to contribute and she just keeps saying she doesnt know - i offered £50 a week, her response was "dont be so rediculous you are hardly ever here i cant expect you to pay that much"
    i cant seem to win!

Anywhooo after her mulling it over for a few days shes decided she would like £32 a week...i have offered more she has said no....

I'm glad you and your Mum have come to a happy agreement about the rent. I think you've been pretty good about taking people's comments on the chin.

Good luck with saving up for your deposit.

If you're going to pay so little, why don't you do a big household shop for your parents once a month - she's hardly going to turn the Tesco van away!

Good idea, and maybe cooking a meal or two for them would be nice:D

I think the OP can't win - when she tried to help her parents by turning off appliances left on in a empty house/rooms all day she was actually accused of being controlling! - I can't see taking over and doing a monthly shop would be any different (and something I would hate personally, my shop is tailored to my planned needs).

She can't help that she is paying 'so little': her parents are adults and should be allowed to be taken at their word when they insist she doesn't pay more. And is it so little - she is barely there and buys her own food etc as far as I recall?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

I think that turning off lights and appliances in someone else's house it a bit of a cheek, quite honestly.

I wasn't suggesting taking over the household shop, just spending an extra £50 or so buying basics which would mean her mother could spend less.

Doing a shop of things she knows her Mum uses ...she'd know the brands and cuts of meat ...she lives there plus washing powder, cleaning stuff...is a basic thank you. She could throw in her favourite chocolates . I did this for my Mum every once in while even when I didn't live at home
