Copyright does remain with the user but the very action of creating that copyrighted content on MSE gives MSE the right to use it as they wish. It's not that difficult and it's standard.

It's not anything they wish, it's only "a perpetual, unlimited free licence to republish that text on our site and to redistribute/make available and/or sell that text in print or electronic form anywhere in the world as part of an edited compilation or otherwise"

That is republish on MSE - only.
Make available in print, electronic form or sell anywhere in the world. That's geographical location. That doesn't mean using a third party site, nor granting any lisence to a third party to use the text, least not any third party to then further sub-license the text.

"licence to republish that text on our site" ... anywhere within the MSE site.

Gosh, Treevo - seven posts on the trot without anyone else posting in between... all saying generally the same thing.

You might as well just have said - public forum, suck it up or go elsewhere - which seems to be the theme of your seven posts.

However, the reason some people are concerned is that they may have signed up many years ago... before Twitter... and never imagined their posts might be singled out for a tweet which would then be sent to potentially tens or hundreds of thousands viewers.

Sharing a recipe on the Old Style board is no big deal BUT sharing details of, say, a miscarriage or infertility - where those dedicated threads currently tend to only be viewed as a support mechanism - is entirely another.

    That's an issue.

    But isn't that the point?

If you publish something publicly then you run that risk- regardless of where you publish it.

I was just making a light-hearted comment regarding New Bride's remark that she doubted anyone would be interested in a tweet saying "New Bride is posting about" - there's quite a few specialty sites dealing with new brides, so suffice to say, depending on the comment there could be quite a few hits.

As for this discussion that appears to be going on around me. It's fairly simple; everything you post or publish on the Internet should be regarded as being immortalised forever. All those silly celebrities who "accidentally" post their selfies or who want those videos of them slurping on Sanchez's sausage removed seem to forget that anything on the Internet can be copied and reposted to thousands of sites in minutes.

If someone doesn't want that to happen to something they publish, then don't publish it. If they don't want to use Twitter, don't use it, and if they don't like MSE using Twitter, don't use MSE. There's a million other sites where people can discuss their kids, the cost of keeping a family and even penis beakers and penis breakers.

I doubt they'll tweet "New Bride has just posted about XXX" because anonymous usernames mean nothing and won't therefore pull in views and posters.

Actually they have - I quoted it in an earlier post.

  • Hi everyone

Sorry, I didn't reply yesterday, I've been working and in meetings most of the day.

I'd love to be able to reply to everyone that PMs and emails me and posts on the forum at all, let alone within 24 hours, but I'm afraid I can't.

Before the discussion continues could I ask you all to have a look at the weekly email? It's been linking to lots of forum content every week for 10 years and is received by 8 million people who can forward it on, tweet it, facebook it etc.
Could you do with a Money Makeover?

And once again, our questions aren't actually answered.

Does the email ever include "UsernameZ from the forum says blah blah blah" without that forum member being pre-advised?

If MSE reproduce our posts on a third party site which then has its own T&C regarding further reproduction, surely this is abdicating their responsibility? (Just because others might do it on private tweets, doesn't make it correct for MSE to start the process.)

Whilst the MSE T&C give MSE rights to reproduce text we post, it doesn't say anything about linking that text to our MSE usernames in said reproduction.

Please would somebody actually answer the questions that are asked, rather than giving us soundbites.

It's an email from MSE, containing republished data in accordance with the MSE T&C. It's not transferring data to a third party who will claim their own rights to the data and to be able to then further sub-license it.
