  • Does anybody know what the law requirements are for holiday pay and maternity?

For example.. I get 25 days holiday a year (which run Jan to Dec), my baby is due 8 May, will I get the full 25 days holiday entitlement to take in those 5 months? tried googling but cannot seem to get a definite answer!

    Hi Jen,

I've had this question with work too, its worth asking HR.
At our place I can only take what I accrue before I start mat leave. The rest Ill accrue whilst off, so will take at the end of mat leave before I start back.
So Im planning on finishing work mid March, and will have accrued 5 days to use.

So for example if you accrue 2 days per month (+1 random day to make up the 25!), you may be able to use 8/9 days before you leave.

Don't forget you should accrue the bank holidays too whilst you're off.

  • Thanks Sjlou - I've checked my contract and nothing in there. We get a holiday form in January with the full entitlement, so pretty sure they will have to honour the 25 days. But like you say better to check than make assumptions :)

I think its because you could technically hand your notice in during mat leave and finish before the end of the holiday year, and therefore end up owing them if you'd taken the full years entitlement before mat leave.

They have to honour it, its just when they they'll let you take it!

Check the maternity policy if your company has one - for me I can only take leave in the year it's accrued. Our leave year runs April-March so I have to take my full entitlement for this year before I leave for maternity in January and then if I was to go back next January I'd have to take all my leave for that year January - March

jen_1985-04 - my company works like TeamLowe's - I have to take all my holiday prior to starting mat leave if my mat leave straddles two holiday years - otherwise I am subject to the firm's usual policy on rolling holiday over (5 days max).

Well, finally bitten the bullet today and been and bought some maternity clothes! Went to Jojo Maman Bebe and the staff were delightful (there was even a fake bump to test out in the changing rooms!). Got 2 dresses, maternity leggings and some ridiculously comfy maternity jeans - could have cried with happiness when I put them on!!!

    Hope everyone is ok.

    claire - any news? x

  • With where I work it's use it or lose it when it comes to holidays! We have a standard 20 days (or something not far off) plus the bank holidays and if we want them we have to use them between in the calendar year.
With that in mind, and because bf has been announced as one of the 8 going over to the US/Canada in January for two weeks (he'll only be home for 14 days in January now!) I'm currently think I will use my allowance over the year as I intend to go back to work in October (with slightly adapted working hours! hoping to change to four days a week). So thoughts are:
January - use 1 day when he comes back from America to be around to fix him as he will no doubt come back exhausted/slightly damaged! use 2/3 days to have 5 days at my parents house to coincide with parental presence (so mum's hols from work and dad being around - Jan is his busy month as he tutors in the UK and France then!).
Feb - use a Friday to have a long weekend off in line with the league weekend the very first weekend
March - Sep - none - will be going on Mat Leave end of the third week of March (if all goes to plan!) will start back at work first week in Oct
Oct - take 2 days (one a Friday for a tournament and one other)
Nov - long weekend plus bf's birthday
December - 2 days for a Fri-Mon weekend for Christmas shopping and enjoyment! Then will go for 2 weeks for Christmas/New year (although won't mind working as long as I get Christmas Eve until 5th Jan off - obviously the Friday 2nd Jan will come from 2015 hols)

That still doesn't use up my allowance so may have to squidge extra in as obviously I don't want to lose it!

One of my colleagues has just come back - supposed to be on 3days a week but she has so much holiday to use she is in 1 day a week until Jan!

Spent most of today typing up my last assignment from a course I started in April time is (only 3 months after I said I wanted to submit it whoops!). A whole assignment typed up in a day - it's 6 pages! good to get it done though.

Had a walk at lunch to a local mini ASDA got some stir fry stuff to make myself chow mein for tea then could not for the life of me settle on what to have for lunch :/ eugh need to plan food better!

Becs, I'm just at home resting. Feel totally fed up. I'm so thankful that at the moment things are ok but I feel like what if it's not in 5 mins time.

I just can't believe I had such a good 20 week scan and then this happened.

The good thing is at 21 weeks my vomiting has finally stopped!

I feel like I have turned a bit of a corner, not feeling as bad as I have the last few weeks, not sure if it's down to releif also as was pretty anxious up to my scan.

Going to have a chill out weekend and watch Children in Need tonight so no doubt the waterworks will be on...

    Hope you are all well.

Claire16c glad to hear the sickness has stopped. I am not being sick now well haven't for a bit but still feel sick all the time. It is so annoying sometimes because if I wasn't sick I might gain some weight.

Weighed myself and I have gone up 2kg :) which I thought was good - not sure what you are supposed to go up depends what your cravings are I guess. For the second time in my life my b00bs are above a 30b which is nice:j. And some weight has definatly gone to my bottom - must be redistribution. I have a clear bump but not sure to others if it just looks like I have a round muffin top  going on but it would appear odd if it was that as I am tiny everywhere else.
I am hoping I feel movement earlier than last time. It was quite late so anything from now onwards would be acceptable baby!

Will be watching Children in Needs as well. Tissues will be essential as I cry over anything. DIY SOS this week was practically a meltdown.
