I started off doing a mixed crime (general crime) and immigration pupillage, then went to an almost entirely criminal law set, carried on doing a bit of immigration, and gradually dropped general crime altogether, although I still do some immigration-related crime. I did a 3 month trial at the start of this year at a Crown Court, for example, on an indictment alleging conspiracy to facilitate unlawful entry into the UK (a supposed dodgy college conspiring to issue dodgy visas to non-EU students).

Sounds so interesting! I always wanted to go into Law after getting a B at A Level but probably wouldn't have been high enough to study it and I really have to work very hard in Uni to get anywhere. I am struggling and its only year one of my degree but after I have completed it (hopefully will!) I will do some courses in Housing Law as it interests me. I do get lots of support though and did at GCSE and A Level - I have it in my mind and understand just can not write it!

Immigration must be a very busy part of the legal system - will you go straight back to work after the baby is born or will you be taking a set time off?

Christmas - I have asked for Mothercare vouchers from all family. I don't want anything so it seems silly to ask for something that I do not want.

    Had a KFC earlier.....mmmmmm..:):):):):)

  • What are you doing for your degree?

I did English Lit, history and geography for A level, and physics AS. OH did maths, economics, physics and media studies before doing law, it doesn't really matter what you do before a law degree, any A levels are fine.

I'm not sure yet quite how long a maternity leave I'll take, it depends how I feel, partly. Barristers are self-employed, so no maternity pay, and it's up to me how long I take.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Can you not claim maternity allowance if you're self employed? Which is practically the same as statutory may pay anyway. I could be wrong but I thought you could.

You can in theory, but in practice, I didn't qualify - in order to get it, I'd have to avoid even answering the phone to a solicitor who had a 5 minute query on a case, which would have been a very bad idea for my practice once I got back.

  • Yes, my Chambers are in the Gray's Inn area, and I'm a member of Middle Temple. OH is in Chambers in the Temple, but he does employment law, not the same area as me.

Because most barristers are in London, we tend to travel a bit - OH unusually had 4 days in Edinburgh this week, and he has a day in Leeds next. I'm in immigration tribunals in London on Monday and Tuesday next week, High Court on Thursday, and Newport on Friday.

I used to work at the High Court :)
Our first baby due 25th May 2014 :T

We're allowed up to 10 keeping in touch days - do you not get those as self-employed? If you do, you could just count the days that you get phone calls you need to answer as your KIT days.
    Mortgage when started: £330,995

  • I'd need more than 10 days, and have to break and then re-claim, and risk falling foul of the regs, anyway.

I did Law, Media Studies and Maths. I had extra time and teaching to get those grades but I can do it! I am doing a degree in Social and Affordable Housing Management, to break the next salary barrier you need a degree really even if its not housing it is just how my company works and I wouldn't want to leave as its a very good company. Only downfall is the maternity it isn't as good as other people have written they get its 6 weeks full pay and the rest is statutory but I am ok with that because I consider myself lucky as some people get less than me. I am saving too.

I have a token to collect the next Bounty Pack so I am off to see if any places have any. The last one was more leaflets for the area. I did get some tea bags and vitamins though!:)

Feeling a bit icky today don't know why as it has worn off a lot but I am wondering if the KFC wasn't a good idea now :o
