Rude, arrogant & entitled; he really ticks all the bad manners boxes.
Anyone who behaved like that in my house would be shown the door and would only be allowed back in after they'd learnt some manners and apologised for their behaviour. The biscuit will only dare to be just a biscuit when it is with its true friend the potato. (Edward Monkton) :beer:0 -
What did he use for an ashtray? not the host's fine bone china I hope
I think sometimes people do this stuff because they can't stand a party not to be about them, or that they aren't being talked about. I once went to a wedding where one of the guests went outside onto the patio and pee'd into a plant pot, during the speeches in full view of the entire crowd.
I have no other explanation why people do this stuff.:A

My parents were both smokers and only ever smoked in 1 room or outside that I recall. When we stayed for a week or so at a time with my grandparents, Dad felt guilty smoking by the back door despite them not minding where he smoked, he only didn't stand outside each time because of his disability limiting his ability to stand.
Definitely never, ever assume you can smoke in another person's house.
I'd have kicked them out, but then, I inherited both my parent's attitudes in some ways...0 -
When I was growing up, my parents didn't smoke, but in those days people who visited the house would light up without ever asking. It was just assumed that they could smoke everywhere. It was disgusting, because not only did the house stink while the visitors were there, you could smell it for days afterwards. It took them into the 70s to have a change of attitude and expect people to go outside.
Since buying my first house, nobody has ever been allowed to smoke indoors. It is not a problem these days as we don't socialise with any smokers at all. When a smoker enters your house, even if they don't light up, they leave a smell behind them that lingers in their clothes and hair. Basically, smokers stink, and so do their houses.
I am quite amazed at the behaviour of the person mentioned in the OP. Surely nobody can think that is acceptable behaviour in 2013! I would have thrown him out on the spot, by whatever means.0 -
Theycshould have said we and other people do not want to breathe in your toxic fumes and smell like ancashtray now go outside or leave,:footie:0

Sounds like he is the obnoxious member of the family (most have one) I do feel sorry for your hosts and hope they have the backbone to exclude him from any future family do's. (Odds are the rest of their family may do the same)I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

My mum always refused to ask people to go outside and smoke. As a result whenever her brothers would visit the smoke was so thick it hurt my eyes.
When I got older I started smoking but refused to smoke in the house. My mum developed chest issues so I refused to let anyone smoke in the house.
My house, my rules. The cigarette would have been put out via a glass of water thrown at it, and he'd have been put out with my boot.
Would he have expected to be able to snort a line were he a drug user?Sigless0
