No, in fact from a few things that he said, I think (although I'm not certain) that he was related to the couple.
I wonder if there might have been something else going on, some history between him and the couple? Or maybe he is just a knob. I can't believe any normal person would smoke in someone else's house, unless they knew the household usually smoked inside.

Would anyone object to an electronic cigarette then?

My OH and I now smoke electronic cigs. They are completely different. In most cases, the liquids we use are completely odourless and the water vapour dissipates very quickly. But we would still ask permission before using them in someone else's house. When we were smokers, we both smoked in our own house but wouldn't dream of smoking in a non-smoker's house.

I've even managed to "stealth vape" on my packed commuter train and nobody even noticed. It can't really be compared to smoking real cigs at all.

  • I haven't read ANY of the responses yet, but my first reaction is CHEEKY Beggar!

I would have told him to leave. Who was he anyway? A former colleague, neighbour, family friend? What? He sounds awful. Many people I know don't smoke in their 'own' house, let alone in someone else's! Where did he flick the fagash?!!!
  • I know it's too late now, but it's a shame you didn't think to get the hosepipe on him!

once it was clear that he wasn't going to stop the host should have just bit their lip to avoid making a scene
however next time , if they are invited to the smokers house they should start having a wee in their living room , "well you invited me , you know i like to drink and i thought you wouldn't mind living with the smell , "

I smoke and I would not dream of lighting up in someone elses house! unless they were smokers themselves (in which case guests can put up or go outside)!
To me this is beyond rude! In fact, although I smoke I don't do it inside the house, and its a house rule that all smokers go in porch or outside.
He would have had his ciggy confiscated and he would have been ejected!

yes - tell him to leave.

My husband smokes but would never smoke in someone else's home unless they also smoked!

  • Out of all our friends and family, only one person smokes and he never smokes in a house -even his own - so I have no idea how I would have responded.

In fact I think I would have been gobsmacked that I had invited someone so rude that a) they felt that they should be allowed to smoke in my house and b) voice that opinion to me.

But I know that had they done so they would never ever get a second invite

I'd have got another cup, filled it with water and poured it over the cigarette!

That action could put you on very dodgy ground. Someone of this guys mind set could twist things if the water were to miss the cigarette and go over him instead. Best just to make it clear verbally that his company was no longer wanted and that he was to leave.
