He didn't look drunk and from what I could see, he used a paper cup as an ashtray.

I'd have got another cup, filled it with water and poured it over the cigarette!

    Just unbelievable.

My BIL is a smoker but he wouldn't dare light up in my house. He knows he's not allowed in my garden either so he walks into the close & does it.

The bedroom he stays in still has to be aired out after he leaves, god knows how bad it would be if I let him smoke in or near the house!

With claire16c on this one, I don't even allow smoking in my garden. To me, that is an area for children and adults alike to be able to relax in and they should not have to put up cigarette smoke being carried in their direction. Smokers are also asked to wash their hands after each cig to avoid the smell being passed from their hands to my furniture.

I would then kick him out.

I don't tell guests in advance that I don't allow injecting of drugs or peeing in the corners in my home but I expect them not to same as with smoking - my house, my rules !!

    How rude of that man.
  • I'd say 'in that case, would you please leave our home. Thanks'

    This.

I have many smoking friends and they all ask if it's ok to smoke outside, my response is always yes and if they'd like somewhere dryer to stand I offer the shed key! :rotfl:

As for electronic cigarettes, I wouldn't be too bothered if they are just those vapour ones. If they can leave a smell in my house I'd politely ask those are smoked outside too (I don't know how I'd know that in advance though!). However, I don't know anyone who smokes those (one person did but I think he has quit now).

Were you not aware that they are a horrible selfish person before inviting? He is obviously a complete idiot if he thinks he has the right to destroy the health of others and I very much doubt he would allow guests to do as they please in his home.

Personally, I doubt I would invite a smoker around my house anyway as all of my colleagues who smoke smell and their breath stinks, so I tend to avoid smokers as much as I can.

Just out of interest, was this guest foreign? I only ask because I'm from Spain and I know that over there t is considered very rude not to smoke in someone house, but to ask a guest not to. The general view is, if I invite them over then they I will do what I can to make them comfortable. It's strange to me now, as I automatically assume houses are non smoking, but when in Spain with my family, even if they are all non smokers they will shout me down if I attempt to go outside with a cigarette. Maybe he has this same background and just hasn't figured out the English way of doing things manners wise.
  • I ask smokers to stand outside and away from the house, I have warned people of this before they come over though as I don't even want people smoking on my doorstep or in my (future) garden.

Didn't you read my post before posting ;)? I am the OP and I didn't invite him anywhere - we were both guests at the same lunch.

No, in fact from a few things that he said, I think (although I'm not certain) that he was related to the couple. It seemed to be mainly family and friends there - although my husband knows them through work.
