And when the charge comes into force in England, Tesco will also stop issuing green clubcard points for reusing plastic bags as they did in Wales.

Also do people realise that the charge applies to the bags got from the chippy as well?
also those wafer thin ones you get on markets, which as a market trader i will not get as they are pointless and even though they only cost £2 per 1,000 i would rather pay a bit more for a good quality bag that my customers could reuse and not last a matter of seconds

The 5p charge will be for the paper-thin bags that are currently free. I don't think they'll replace them as they are designed to degrade very quickly.

I find Tesco free bags have disintegrated somewhere on the drive home in general.

It's getting to the point that everything heavy has to go in its own separate bag which is hardly the environmental point of using less plastic per bag.

The argument is that they take 1000 years to degrade in the earth,so are they going to tax my flip top bin bags? are they going to tax my dustbin bags?,my recycling bags?,dry cleaning bags?,the giant bags my new three piece suite came in?washing machine, fridge,tv bags?............It's just a crazy liberal party stunt.

yes all boils down to costs and nothing to do with being environmentally friendly. as the costs go up then they get cheaper/thinner bags. they think giving shoppers 5 bags in better for the environment than them getting the thicker bags they used to have and giving the customer 1 of the thicker bags.

true, what they want is for you to go to your supermarket for your single £1 loaf of bread and pay another £1 for a cloth carrier bag, but then why cant they do as Primark do and even stores in the USA and issue paper bags

They don't because it doesn't. It's just supermarkets and large stores.

In Wales isn't it all food shops that you have to pay for them?

If it is supermarkets and large stores only then Tesco Express and Metro will probably miss out on having to do the charge. Likely to be those stores covered by Sunday Trading, also on the articles I have seen there is nothing to say it will just be food stores in England so if you bought clothes they might charge you for the bag.
Also he companies are allowed to keep the 5p if they want.

I was responding to the poster who referenced England. I don't really care what happens in Wales!

At the moment it is just a suggestion by the government. It would seem daft to have slightly different rules depending on if you are in Wales, Scotland, NI or England.

the charges applied is not a tax to be paid to the government, it is a charge to try and discourage consumers from purchasing so many plastic bags ( Aldi, Lidl etc. have been doing this for years) and to encourage consumers to use their own bags.

But they are suggesting, like the Welsh Assembly, that the 5p is donated to charity but they can not enforce it.
