Housing Associations helping with moving costs?

May be moving by the end of this month from a private rental to a HA property but they are yet to go in and start the list of repairs they have to do and clean it before we can even sign the tenancy.

This causes problems with the rent and giving notice for the private rental as we are going to end up paying £560 for this property then £85.11 per week for the new property and we just dont have this kind of money as only i work, my husband looks after our 2 year old. We have no choice but to give notice for the current property at the end of September as we have just entered a new month and cant just leave. (rolling contract)

What makes it worse is we are getting £350 in vouchers to paint the house(which is amazing and a great help) but no help to get carpet/flooring which we have had quotes from £599 plus . We also need a cooker which im happy to get a clean second hand one.

I know we can get 2 lots of HB for 4 weeks but we only get £112 a month in our current flat and not sure if we will even get this much for our new house as the rent is so much cheaper and its a 3 bed house not the 2 beds we require.

Does anyone know what we can do in this situation as we genuinely are glad to get a HA house as in the long term we will save a LOT of money but for the first month or 2 we are going to REALLY struggle and dont know if we will have the money for rent in both places.

Do you qualify for a budgeting loan? https://www.gov.uk/budgeting-loans/eligibility

Or can you negotiate the HA tenancy start date so there's no overlap with your old tenancy? You won't be charged rent by the HA until the tenancy start date.

And as you will have a 'spare room' are you aware of the 'bedroom tax' which will reduce your maximum HB on the HA property by 25%?
  • You are lucky to get so much in vouchers! Lots of houses in social housing look awful!

Look at freecycle, gumtree and charity shops for furniture.

I doubt id get a budgeting loan as i had one in 2011 when i was on maternity leave and run out of money for baby milk and nappies and we were in so much debt i struggled to pay any of it back for months and it ended up going to a debt collector.

The HA have told us they cannot wait for a long period to end our current tenancy as they want someone in the house and paying rent ASAP which is annoying as we have been waiting for them to do their safety checks for 3 weeks and its possibly going to be another 3 weeks before we can sign a tenancy because they have work to do on the house. I may ask once we know what the exact time scale will be.

I'm aware about the bedroom tax but wasnt sure how much they would take off us as we dont get full HB.

We only need a cooker and carpet, got all other furniture.

Cooker could be found second hand but a full house of carpet and lino would have to be bought new obviously.

Its the 2 overlapping rents causing us the problem.

What type of works need carrying out a part from the safety checks? Are you not able to move in and have them done whilst in situ.

Why? In my first flat I had carpet offcuts on bare floorboards until we could save up for a carpet. For 3 months I had to cook on a camping ring until I could save for a cooker. Have one room carpeted for the 2 year old, you can get used carpet free on freecycle sometimes and clean it.

Why are the HA letting you move into a property that's too big for your needs? I could understand if you were homeless but you aren't.

I'm not having a go at you as it seems some people have been brought up to expect they are entitled to money from the tax payers.

Looking back in your previous posts you are complaining that you need dental treatment but have no money and can you get this paid for - then a week later you are posting about a great full tv package deal you now have with Sky. Now you have been given 350 to paint your house and you are still complaining!
