How to get rid of Cat Urine Smells

Removal of cat urine smells from your carpets is easy and inexpensive using this homemade cat urine removal recipe. It will clean and deodorize cat urine odors from your carpet or rugs without purchasing specialised cleaning products.
    Recipe:

    Baking Soda
    White Vinegar
    Dishwashing Detergent (Dish Soap)
    3 % Hydrogen Peroxide 10%

Wet the area with a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. Make sure you use enough of the solution to! penetrate the fibers deep down.

After the vinegar treatment dry off the carpet as much as possible. You can assist drying by blotting with paper towels. If you own a wet/dry vacuum extractor use that to remove excess moisture.

Apply a handful of baking soda over the affected area. Mix a quarter of a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent and drizzle this solution over the baking soda. Alternatively you can use a spray bottle for the hydrogen peroxide solution.
(!use caustic detergent that you put in a dishwasher)

Work it well into the carpet with a soft brush or your fingers. Put on a pair of rubber or latex gloves if you use your fingers.

Allow to dry. You can assist drying with a heater or a fan.

Once completely dry vacuum up the dried baking soda. Use a hard bristled brush to loosen up the baking soda if necessary.

Obviously it'll mean either you visiting your property if possible or arranging someone to do it for you so may not be practical

  • Thank you very much for that recipe Granny :T I have asked someone to quote me on professional cleaning and if too much I may ask someone to do this for me. I have a wet/dry cleaner but not really sure how I could get over there unless I made a weekend of it with the kids  I will have a think on it and ask DH what he thinks. I'm determined to save as much money as I can (obviously) but I don't want to clean it and then the smell come back :( Anyway will wait upon quotes and see how it all adds up :)

I will note down that recipe for myself though ;) our pup doesn't usually have accidents but you never know...

Was a NSD today but I'm thinking of buying chips from the chippy to go with eggs & beans. I have spent all day cleaning and forgot to get something already cooked out of the freezer!

DH is back early December now :T so i'm happy. It was around the 10th but he's managed to get on an earlier flight as he was the first out there :). Thank gawd cos i've had enough on my own now!

My DD fell out with one of her friends yesterday (as all 5 yr olds worldwide do!) and I got a snotty message on my phone from the mum saying that it wasn't on and she won't have her daughter being upset. geez! This kid is one of the most spoilt girls I know, she has a wardrobe to rival a shop with shoes to match each outfit (!!) she's got every toy under the sun and is just horrible to my daughter! I've told my DD several times to invite her other friends over (in a bid to get her closer to someone else ) but everytime she does this spoilt kid goes mad and screams at my DD. I've just ignored it as it's just kids being kids but now i've had someone moaning at me well I can assure you that that was the best reason ever not to invite her over again ;) The pettiness of some people astounds me!

I've done the spreadsheet today and I can hopefully add another £300 in December to the ISA account bringing it just over my target :D ! I have money for school trips due the week before xmas, I can't believe they couldn't wait until January considering the trip is next summer. Oh well, just means less to my savings (boooooooo)

Laptop still dodgy and I haven't got the part I need yet :o I was waiting for DH to do it for me :o

I've bought some lovely smelly candles for the house in christmassy colours/flavours and they smell delicious :D and don't worry they were from the cheapo shop and over half price off ;)

  • Morning, My laptop finally has charge for a while! :T I've popped in and out over the last few days and replied to a few of your threads but couldn't stay long for fear the battery would reach critical and die on me . It's finally fully charged so will catch up on some of you now.

I've had NSD's all weekend. I do need a few bits from the shop but it can wait until tomorrow. I have worked out my meal plan this week on what is left in my fridge/freezer/cupboards. Just need some fruit & milk. Will use the frozen veg instead of buying fresh this week & will try and keep costs to a minimum. I haven't kept count of what the spends are this month :o again, but I think i've come in under £300 :T I might go back through my bank statements and have a look.

I've spoken to DH this weekend and he's making his own plans for making a new career. I just hope he decides to let me in on it! We're hoping to be able to move within 2 years though :).

We left Santa letters out last night, revised letters ;) ones that didn't contain the entire toy section from Arg0s :rotfl:. So this is the new list -DD wants a snow tiger from the adverts (the charity whereby you pay £3 I think a month and get a free teddy) as she cries every time it comes on at the way people skin them and use their fur for coats  (can you believe this is advertised on a kids channel!), she would also like a new house for us to live in (me too!) and a house for the poor hungry birds that live outside :A bless her. I hope that we can find a nice bird house as I think that's lovely and we have a doll's house for her instead of a real house :o I hope that will suffice?! For now anyway :p. DS2 asked for a new house too  with 6 bedrooms, one for everyone (I think even DH & I & the dog get our own rooms :rotfl:) and he also asked for a bike (prompted by me though!!) and the most random one i've ever heard...he asked for some shooting gun (he means chewing gum just he says it wrong :rotfl:)......I've gone to great lengths to avoid talking about how much I hate living here in front of the kids and it just goes to show that no one is actually happy living here. Which makes me quite sad, I thought the kids were ok and liked it  makes me even more determined to save every spare penny we have :). I still have 2 cheques to leave my account from the 3 and i'm going to great lengths to keep reminding myself :rotfl:I hope they come out after payday now really as i'm short if both come out :o I have enough money for the larger one but not both!

Anyway enough boring rambling from me! Hope everyone is having a good weekend :)

    Hello DFw, :hello:

Just catching up - lovely to read how much more positive you are since DH called, and you know when he'll be home. :T :D

Ideas for removing pee-smells from carpet all very interesting - does the bicarb etc also work on old, dried-in urine as well as fresh 'accidents'? ..And what about the wood floors? (Bit of personal interest there as my T2 family have pets, although they paid a double deposit to cover possible damage ).

Am very impressed by your xmas preparations - love the 'interpretations' of your kids' desire-lists! :rotfl:

So sorry to hear about the house, I am sure you will live somewhere else one day . Maybe dont wish for the six bedrooms, imagine the cleaning !

    Have a lovely day x

I've spoken to the lady who has the keys for my house again and she's been in again and isn't hopeful we can save the carpet. Thinking I may need to get a new one. I'm calling again tomorrow after she's spoken to the professional carpet cleaning people to hear what they have to say but we're not too hopeful (and thank god I have savings. Straight out of debt and into more nearly!)

I think the kids want to live in a big house, they are always asking to go to Grandad's house (who always has too many bedrooms spare...perhaps i'll just send them off to live with him ;)) We're in the middle of saving. We won't be able to get a mortgage as we've just finished our dmp :( so I guess it would be renting for the next how ever many years until our credit rating picks up!?

I've kept all my kids xmas letters too :T although i've no idea where I put them all now  ?! I don't really want 6 bedrooms but 5 would be nice :rotfl: then I could have one spare for guests :T Forever a pipe dream I imagine given the state of the world at the moment and the price of everything!

  • Well I've sat down for 10 mins but need to get up to check the roast in a minute. I've cut all the kids hair today :T so that saved me over £20 (which I did have saved but I am too tight to spend it :o considering i'm a trained hairdresser I feel I should put the skill to good use every now and then :rotfl:) They all look very smart and tidy now if I do say so myself ;). I've made a flan with the kids, I let them design the flan with the fruit whilst I set about making the jello stuff. Well I turned around and they had put 6 pinapple slices all on top of each other in the middle, thrown the tin of strawberries all over the place and had eaten half the peach slices :rotfl::eek: I rectified it myself and sent them off !!

I've done the dreaded ironing too. Really need a new iron though, it isn't heating properly??? And my 'spare' one that i've kept in the cupboard for ages didn't turn on at all  so two broken irons now and ironing took twice as long!

I've done 4 washes and absolutely loving the heated airer it's getting things dried nearly as quick as the tumble drier used to, plus I don't have it hanging all over the place so my radiators are free to heat the house :T

I checked my emails this morning and have missed a parcel, although i've no 'missed parcel card' so i've rescheduled it for tomorrow and hoping they deliver it whilst i'm in and not on a school run! I also hope they have the correct address as it says there was a card left and I can't find one anywhere?! It's DD's main pressie so I'll be very upset if it goes missing . I've a list for this week for presents to get with my vouchers, then I will have finished all the nieces and nephews and only have siblings of mine & dh's to buy for. DS1 will be finished too and I only need one more present for DD :) I've not started on stocking fillers though so need to get to a cheap shop for those I think ;).

Anyway can smell the chicken so gotta go check it! Chat soon :A
