Hi,
I'd like to know which network is best for international calls (I'm not interested in third-party systems for getting free/cheap calls - I just want to able to make 3-5 hours of international calls a month from my mobile without worrying about paying a fortune). Thanks to anyone who can help!0 -

Anyone tried the foocall mobile app? I've used the free 50p they give you and it seems OK. Basically it lets you use your inclusive minutes to access a local number to call overseas. The rates seems pretty good and the call quality was very good. However, before before I top up with my own dosh I wondered whether anyone else had experience of using their services? The app works on iPhone, Android, BB and Windows Mobile 7 as far as I can tell. I used my iPhone. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.:)0

Vyke VoIP service gives you the possibility to make cheap international calls in many different ways. The rates are quite interesting; with a package that costs 25 cents for an hour on calls to 25 countries. You can use Vyke service on your PC, with your mobile phone and even using your traditional landline phone. Vyke supports a huge list of mobile phone models and types, including the iPhone, iPad, Android phones, BlackBerry phones, and Nokia phones.
Cheap international rates, among the cheapest on the market
Multiple ways of using the service, including on a PC, on mobile phones, an using landline phones
Many mobile handsets supported
Calls made through Wi-Fi, 3G, Callthrough and Callback.
Vyke also offers SMS service. You can send the text messages from your PC or your mobile phone. An SMS costs 4p whatever be the destination and from wherever you are sending it. This represents a improvement over SMS cost in many countries where the price is at times higher than that of a minute of phone call.
When you register for a Vyke account, your username is your phone number, prefixed with your country and area code. You use that and a password to enter your account where you have information on your credit, your call history, plus some features that allow you to manage your funds and calls.
To use the service on your PC, download it for free from there. The VoIP app for PC is very light on resources and works smoothly.
It is really worth trying!0 -
The new iPhone/Android app from Vonage Mobile (https://www.vonagemobile.com) potentially offers a new convenient and cheap way to make international calls from a smart phone. Instead of opening the normal phone app you just open the Vonage app instead and dial your call (or click on a contact) just as you would normally do. No need for any call backs or any messing around.
Calls are free to any smart phone anywhere in the world which has the same app. Calls to Europe, India, China, New Zealand landlines are about 1.4 pence per min (2.2 or 2.4 US cents), which is close to the best rates from the override providers on a landline.
Of course, any data costs would be on top of the Vonage charge, so using this app would make most sense if you are using free Wi-Fi or, if you are using 3G, the data is within your free allowance.
Even if you don't have a monthly data allowance, and you have no free Wi-Fi, it might make sense to pay for the data needed to make the call. For instance, on 02 pay-as-you-go you pay a maximum of £1 for data for one day (subject to fair usage policy). So, a 20 minute call to Germany would cost 20x1.4 + 100 = 128 pence, which is likely to be cheaper than O2 rates for the same call.
You have to buy credit in advance, but you can do this through iTunes.
Vonage claim that call quality is better than normal mobile calls. I did a 40 minute call to a US landline, yesterday, and the call seemed very clear. It cost me nothing, as they currently charge nothing for calls to the US.
Vonage is a big, well respected company. I have been using Vonage as my landline for 3 years now, and it has been very reliable.koru0 -
Someone here said that the person you are calling on Rebtel does not have to call you back but Martin's article indicates that they do. The Rebtel website doesn't mention this at all so has it changed since the article was written?
My husband is off to the UAE tomorrow and will buy a local sim, probably Digi. Can I call him using Rebtel and he just answers the phone without having to call back?
If he has to call back then presumably all that does is uses up his credit, unless of course his credit includes free local calls. I can't see the point of us both using inclusive minutes if only one of us needs to, so any update on this would be welcome.
Secondary question - Rebtel says it charges 13.09p/min to call the UAE. Is that on top of my inclusive minutes? If that is the case then I'm better off using Lebara at 12p/min.
