  • The camera and phone chargers etc use neglible amount of power.

Unless you have a system that will tell you if an LED is out then a charger wont be an issue.

4 pages of info - very useful if you understand why you need one.

I don't for the life of me understand why you would want to record where you have been. What is the purpose?

Is it to record a front end accident if ever you had one? Or are you interested in reminding yourself what you saw on a journey - hey look - Stonehenge or Blackpool Tower?

And while I am on the subject of 'recording' why is it important to download the data off a satnav that shows where you have been and what speed you were doing?
    Totally befuddled.

That's sort of like saying why take pictures of a holiday or an event you have attended, naturally you don't have to but may want to , I'll be driving in Wales soon, I'm sure some of the route will be scenic and worth capturing. The accident thing... well let's hope none us ever need it, however there are posts on here where with hindsight a camara may have captured crucial footage.

    pretty much this!

    i took one of these
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-x-Add-a-Circuit-Fuse-Tap-Piggy-Back-Standard-Blade-Fuse-Holder-12-24-Volt-/190904134717?

cut the plug off one of these and joined the wire up the the above
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xcar+usb+splitter&_nkw=car+usb+splitter&_sacat=0&_from=R40 (get one with the usb ports already built in)

tucked that up somewhere out of sight using zip ties

then got a nice long cable to route it round the screen out of view
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-2-0-Lead-A-Plug-To-Mini-B-5-pin-Data-Cable-Lead-5m-1m-1-8m-2m-3m-5m-Sat-Nav-/110913416167?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item19d2f46be7

i went down the splitter route as i have a few other accessories that i power in the car, plus it was a bit more flexible for future applications

as an alternative you can use one of these combined with the piggy back fuse

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.X12v+5+v+usb&_nkw=12v+5+v+usb&_sacat=0&_from=R40
and then just extend it with usb cables

    all straight forward stuff

i think the key is to not cut any wires and to have it all installed out of site so it can rattle around and put stress on the connectors etc

also its nice to have the standard fag lighter free for passengers etc
which camera did you buy then?

Rear facing camera is essential for those drivers than never have accidents yet see hundreds in their rear view mirrors after causing them.

    Maybe?

You will understand the day that you are in an accident which you believe is not your fault and the other party denies liability and it goes 50/50 or worst case against you. I am right in the middle of such a case but have the DVR evidence which I believe quite clearly shows I was in the right and disputes the utter BS the 3rd party insurers are claiming actually happened.

Oh and if you have it on all the time you might catch something funny for You've been framed!!!

You could always pull apart the interior light, solder in a small 12-5v step down power supply to the interior light switch (just strip down a cheap lighter socket adaptor for its PCB) and then connect your USB to that instead..... No more wires to worry about :)
At first I thought this a good idea, however I am told that there is no permanent power supply there, because the 0v is switched?
