In Car DVR Dash camera
Options
Not sure if I should post this in the techie board
I'm considering a dash camera, basically just want front view, internal rechargeable battery with longish record times and night recording. Was looking at a mobicom which seems good, I have a few none used mobile phones (Sony) that are sitting doing not much.
Obviously in true MSE style don't want to spend much perhaps £20-30
Any recomendations?

I have one on order. Most cams come from HK or China and take a while to get here 2-4 weeks.
If you go on eBay there are 1001 dashcams available. I have 4 dashcams - 3 of them sitting in a box because they are rubbish or the mount is horrific. You need a dashcam to be small and discreet. If you have to constantly remove it the one time you need it you'll have forgotten to plug it in.
The most important thing after the performance of the cam is the mount. 2 of my cameras I don't use because of the mount - the typical satnav suction mounts which are fine at dash level but when you factor in the rear view mirror and the angle of the windscreen it becomes too obtrusive and unusable. Type in "DR32 mount" into eBay for a couple of small mounts - but you need the camera tripod screw on the camera or holding bracket.
Even the camera that I do use is a compromise and not 100% brilliant - I keep a paperclip in the car to do a hard reset on 2 in 10 starts because it freezes. The man without a signature.0 -

Thanks, that was one of them I was looking at, it looks like that one though has to be plugged into the 12v (which I don't want to do, as I don't want wires trailing in the vehicle anymore) .
As long as I can get say 3-4hrs recording time and similar battery time, that should do me :cool:0 -
Ive got one of the Road Angel ones, there not cheap, but a fantastic piece of kit. The advantage of the ready made ones is that they record on a loop, and are connected to gps, so when playing back you see the video, time, speed, g-forces etc. The reason i got it, is i drive a sporty car, and don't trust garages not to thrash the car! Mine fits behind the rear view mirror so you cant even see it, have it wired up so it turns on with the ignition. To see the video, i just take out the SD card and plug into a laptop, all the software is on the sd card, so you can use any computer.0

I have this cheapy one - it does everything I want - 7 hrs recording time (on a 16GB SD card) and runs for 3 to 4 hours on the internal battery.

There are of course much better cameras at a much higher price - which give GPS position and your speed superimposed on the picture - I'd love to have one, but this is a money-saving forum and I can't stretch to buy one of them.
Here's short clip of what it can do - It's not meant to be viewed full screen by the way. I also learned NOT to leave things on the dash as the camera catches their reflection on the windscreen.

It's difficult these days, the market has been flooded with cheap, terrible quality cameras from China. Worse, the retailers in the UK are selling the same sh*t too. Which is why I got myself a Sanyo Xacti, a handheld HD video camera, with a screw hole for a tripod mount. Bought a cheap camera suction mount on Ebay and it's been perfect.

Urgh..... First of all, the gap was much shorter than it appears on the video, but I can't do anything about the focal length of the camera.
Secondly, he wasn't in sight until at least half way between the two.
Thirdly, I needed that lane for the roundabout.
Forthly, he was travelling at ridiculous speed (easily over 100mph) and I didn't know what he was going to do, had I moved over when i'd seen him, there would have been a collision........ I was travelling at "motorway speed", at the point where he cut down the LH lane, he'd slowed down, but clearly thought he could get through the gap.
Lastly, troll all you like, but the guy was still a f**king idiot.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
