I KNOW!!! That is what I said in my post if you bother to read it properly.
If you already know that, why did you complain to CPP about it? It has nothing to do with CPP.

you will see that I rang HMRC FIRST for the refund procedure (nothing specific on the website) - that took 32 minutes of my life, 26 on hold - and THEN registered my displeasure with CPP along with thousands of others.
Can't see anything about contacting HMRC in your original post. Regardless, you (along with "thousands of others") are complaining to CPP over something they have no control over. A futile half an hour on hold in pursuit of £14.

    I've already posted the link to contacting HMRC several times on this thread;
    http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kb5/hmrc/contactus/home.page.
Use the link and it costs nothing in 'phone calls and no time "on hold"

Since that is for regular payments, not a one-off like this is, the circumstance is completely irrelevant.

The Financial Ombudsman told me to claim the first part from the bank as the retailer - was he wrong?
You don't "claim" anything. You make a complaint of wrong-doing by the seller of the insurance. There are no guarantees and, as I said earlier, just because CPP have paid out it does not automatically follow that HSBC will.

Incidentally, you don't talk to the "Financial Ombudsman" when you ring the FOS call centre. Just like the "guy from CPP", the operators are not qualified to comment on the likely success or failure of your complaint.

Clearly, they were both wrong, since your complaint to HSBC has failed.

If you contact HSBC about your complaint, they'll refer you to the wording of their "full and final" response to your concerns. It says to refer it to the Ombudsman if you remain dissatisfied. You'll also likely be "on hold" for some time prior to them reiterating this to you.

You can refer your HSBC complaint to the Ombudsman Service if you feel that you have a legitimate complaint, but do be aware that the process takes in excess of eighteen months…

i just telephoned CPP as I am fairly sure with all the credit cards, loans etc we have had over the years, this came up, especially with Egg who used to hard sell over the phone. The lady said that unless you can confirm when the policy was cancelled, or had the policy number, she couldnt confirm whether I was eligible. she asked me to send a copy of my birth certificate and my telephone number as additional security questions for them to ask me when I next ring. does this sound right to anyone? and does anyone know whether this scheme was used for catalogue companies? I remember being charged unknowingly for cover with them. I did cancel but never got a refund. I will check my bank statements for Egg payments but its probably too long ago - any other suggestions of checking please? thanx :)

The CPP scheme only covers the period subsequent to 2005, anything earlier than this you'd have to complain to the Bank who may have sold it to you.
If your details were already on file, you should already have been written to by CPP.

If you want to know if you had it with other lenders prior to 2005 you'll have to send a Subject Access Request (SAR) letter to each of them. This costs £10 for each, which could prove expensive if it turns out you never had a policy.
  • Great news I followed the template but altered the wording to personalize it a bit sent the letter on the 28th Feb. and got a cheque this morning for £267.91. Hurrah, this did include 8% interest. Thanks so much for the template advice, it really did the trick. Jules.

thanks for response, but I have just rung them again and another person has confirmed I did have a policy but they need more verification from me, so I need to send that off. I found an old spreadsheet with a date on for Egg and also have been checking my online bank statements so have another date for them (when it was cancelled). at least I know there is a policy so its worth sending verification off now. where there is a will, there is a way!

You must have moved home since the time of the policy and they haven't been able to contact you. Again, remember that the scheme only covers the period post January 2005.

I used the MSE guide to assist with my claim under the CPP scheme earlier this year. I've come home to a letter tonight with a cheque for £299.91. This is basically every premium I'd paid between January 2005 and last year, plus interest, less tax. A very nice way to start the bank holiday weekend.

I'd also tried claiming separately from HSBC for the 3 years before January 2005, with them having sold the policy to me. They knocked me back, but I intend to try through the Ombudsman. The fact that CPP have effectively admitted they were at fault now should assist. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

CPP have actually admitted nothing, they have simply refunded the premiums you paid.

If you refer your HSBC complaint to FOS, your success with CPP will have no bearing on the way the Ombudsman views your case.

Expect to be waiting eighteen months for a by no means certain (or favourable) outcome.
