    Not true.

I have a broken nail and it certainly isn't longer than my finger but - depending on the angle - I could make a mark on my own arm with that nail.
    So not necessarily 'long nails'.

    But that's you.
We don't know what the OP's wife's nails are like, so it's not fair to make things up.
    So not necessarily 'dirty nails'.

    Not necessarily 'pierced the skin'.
We are not discussing 'next time'.
    We are discussing 'this time'
    - which I agree should never have happened.

I'm on about microscobic dirt that's why I said what I can see, yes we should discuss this time so that hopefully there isn't a next time.

Thank you paulineb and to everyone else who offered constructive advice.
I reported the incident to the police who came and took the details. My wife was allowed to take some clothes while they attended and is away until Sunday at the request of our sons.
I have emailed her to say that I understand she is very stressed and to ask her how she would like to resolve things....At the end of the day she is still their mother.
Her reply was that she is too emotional to discuss it at the moment. Hopefully we will sort it out soon.
    Thanks to everyone again.

I think everyone i know when i was growing up in the 60s and 70s must of been victim of abuse according to people on here...
Strange how society's children's behavior has changed since they started to call it abuse..
The children of today threaten you with reporting if you shout at them..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

And a generation earlier than that it wouldn't have been considered abuse if a husband hit his wife.

If a certain behaviour would be considered assault if it happened between two strangers in the street, it's still assault even if it happens between family members.

And it is barely 20 years ago that the law finally decided a husband could rape his wife. Before then, rape within marriage was not an offence.

Times change. Standards change. Usually for the better...
