Hope you find some shoes btw - shoe shopping has to be the best type of shopping! :D shoes don't care if you're having a fat day!

Ditto. Apart from Dorothy Perkins petite super skinny jeans, which look just about ok with the bottoms folded up, I don't think I've bought any trousers since I moved out of my mum's house 4 years ago, because she used to take them up for me! I even have a sewing machine and in theory know how to do it, but it is such a pain. I have been wearing the same pair of horrible black trousers that are basically falling apart to work for the past 3 years. This is why I wear loads of dresses even when they don't suit me, because you don't have to take them up!

Omg yes I love those jeans! They are the only jeans I buy nowadays! When I used to be flush, I'd go into levis and get them specifically made but ££££.

I am 5ft 1" and always wear highish heels so my trousers are bought/taken up to that height, so in summer when I wear slightly flatter sandals they drag on the floor. I don't really suit cropped pants but have had to resort to them on holiday, but they just look as if they are too short, not actually cropped!!

I do sympathise, being only 10 years older than you, not far off your size and living a similar lifestyle but most of the clothes that have been suggested here (lovely as many of them are) seem to me to be terribly expensive and verging on the overdressed for a normal guest at a wedding. Given what you've said about your finances and lifestyle, why think of forking out that much for something you can't afford and will never wear again?

My comments are intended to be positive but there are other ways of trying to be helpful which don't involve saying "this is a lovely dress that costs £80 even if you'll only ever wear it once".

I think it really does depend on the kind of wedding you think you're going to - I've honestly never been to one where an adult woman guest would look overdressed in anything on this thread, though. It's a lot easier being a girl under the age of about 11 or 12, though, dressing for a wedding.

I remember going to my godfather's wedding at the age of 11, on the hottest day of the summer, wearing a dress my grandmother had made (she was a dressmaker) from Liberty tarna lawn, bare legs, and sandals. My mother and godmother were less cool, in posh frocks, jackets and tights, and my Dad, uncle and godfathers were sweating buckets in morning dress.

I absolutely agree with your comment about cost. I wavered at one point and actually considered shelling out loads on a lovely dress which did fit, in John Lewis but thankfully my common sense kicked in. I would never wear it again and it would be foolish of me to spend too much money.

I do think your comments are trying to help btw, I just kinda felt you simply didn't believe anyone could have such a sparse wardrobe. Believe it, it's true. :)

I bought a lovely dress in John Lewis for a wedding last year, which did cost more than I wanted to spend, but it looked 20 times better than anything else I tried on, right length, wholly suitable, and 30% off (sadly, 30% off a fortune is still a small fortune!)

I've worn it for two more weddings since, as at the second wedding, OH and I were the only guests present who'd attended the first, and at the third wedding, as I was the only guest present from either of the first two.

I've also made a couple of opportunities to wear it, going out with OH. Once was a picnic in the park last summer, so I didn't need to be done up like the dog's dinner, but it felt nice and OH liked it, too.

So it cost £180, but at 5 wears so far, it's down to £36.40 an outing, and counting (-:

Best of it is, the style is different from pretty much everything else there (other dresses in this size in this shop wouldn't go near me so it's a blessing it was this particular style which was loose and unfitted, which was there.

I think the apt phrase here is... I got lucky. :D

I wish you luck in advance, lol.

Sounds lovely! Do you need a jacket or similar, or are you happy with the sleeves as they are, and therefore you don't need one?

Do you have some jewellery, a nice necklace and ear-rings or bracelet to match?

It's not the most weddingy thing I've ever seen but it's definitely fancier than normal day clothes so I think it will do. It's in a colour that suits me (darkish back ground with lighter small pattern....it's not black), a shape that doesn't emphasise things and it was also half price.

    At last. Happy days. :D

    I need shoes now. :rotfl:

fantastic! Monsoon makes some lovely stuff (as well as the odd thing that you wouldn't want to be seen dead in, such as a green and bright orange striped skirt I saw there once).

    What colour is it?

Wait, why is everyone suddenly jumping on the lifestyle brigade? I haven't seen anything that might point towards her having issues, she's just trying to dress for her shape. I didn't realise everyone was an expert on OP.

I would worry about dressing for a wedding too, especially since there's LOTS of photos at the event and you don't want to be the dumpy one making no effort in someone's pictures that will last a possible life time.

I didn't imply that aliasojo had an issue with her weight, but an issue with people mentioning it because I thought there was nothing ontowards in lifeform post yet aliasojo responded quite defensively.

I do think that 16 pages to discuss what to wear at a wedding is a bit odd but I suppose some people are more concerned about some things than others.
  • It's not the OP ranting over 16 pages, though, she's made a few posts and the rest of us are responsible for the blethering on.

Yay! Really pleased you found something! I would have exactly the same problem. I only ever wear the same clothes to everything, which I would describe as "smart casual"/casual ( ie: I wear short dresses over jeans or black trousers with a light cardi in summer, and with a thick cardi in winter...lol). I have zero "smart" attire, and being a lady of a certain *ahem* girth myself, I'm sure it would take me absolutely ages to find something I'd be comfortable wearing to a wedding! Luckily, I never get invited to any. :p Well done!
