Ha ha, this made me laugh! My hubby is a noisy eater who eats off his knife and, if he's really enjoyed his meal, will lick his plate:eek::eek:

I've told him umpteen times over the years about it, to no avail, but on one occasion when we had our grandsons for a meal, and hubby licked his plate, 4yo just said in amazement 'What are you doing granddad?' which brought him up sharp as he didn't even know he'd done it!

It hasn't stopped him though, now he offers to collect the plates and take them to the kitchen, where he can have a good (private) licking session!

I honestly think it might have been something that put me off a relationship with a person.

What a compliment to your cooking skills.

In private yes in public no way

I stopped my plate licker by offering bread to mop up gravy so he cleans the plate with this now.

I must admit - I do scrape the fork/spoon on my teeth but thats if I'm wearing lipgloss or lipstick and don't want it to rub off. I do also take tiny mouthfuls as I like my food to last so I can savour it and I know that really winds OH up but he makes a slot of slurping and sloshing noises when he eats and he knows I can't stand noises that sounds wet. They're just horrific. My step-dad likes his knife and I find it revolting.

I really couldn't tolerate someone who's eating habits made me feel even slightly nauseous and refused to improve the revolting way they ate. It's about good manners and consideration for others I reckon.

Anyway, THE most disgusting experience I had of this was my horrible ex FIL who had false teeth. We were in a restaurant when he announced that he had some food stuck under his top plate. To my absolute horror, he whipped out his top set, licked the food off the plate and put his teeth back in. I had to excuse myself to go and retch in the ladies!

There is a guy at work who is the most vile eater I have ever come across (he is a lovely guy which I think makes it worse!)... anyway, I always seem to end up sitting opposite him at work lunches etc... puts me right off my food... :o

I don't think that I could be in a relationship with someone who turned my stomach every time we ate together :(

My mum left someone due to his eating habits. He was a lovely bloke and a millionaire but she just couldnt live with it and he wouldnt admit to it/change it

I bet he ain't still single.
This thread is semi amusing, nobody is perfect, I know one of my brothers chews with his mouth open and it's annoying, but it's just part of his personality which he is entitled to, I'm sure I have annoying habits but if a partner doesn't like it, they can always leave so that the next 'victim' can have a turn.
  • To me, someone eating with their mouth open isn't annoying, it's absolutely vile. I think there's a world of difference between trivial annoying habits and the utter disrespect someone with no table-manners displays towards themselves and others. Imagine not feeling able to invite a partner or family-member to a social occasion because you're ashamed of them?

In a relationship bad table manners, rather than someone being completely unaware of some arcane rules of etiquette would be deal-breaker for me. They would have been ditched after the first offense.

A member of my family eats with his mouth open. Its because of a medical condition which makes anything else impossible. (Some sort of nasal blockage. There are times to accept people cannot comply with social norms and be forgiving, eating with those who have medical conditions or problems, or those who know no better.

Eating with some one who knows better and continues doing something that they know is causing their partner discomfort is not just the eating issue its the consideration issue.

As you say, there is no need to stay with some one for what ever reason it doesn't work in a realtionship :)

My bro doesn't have a medical condition , it's just the way he is, and his wife doesn't seem to mind.
It's not as if the folk being criticised for the way they eat are eating 24/7 or that the moaning partners were not aware before they got together with their partners, I just wonder if those moaning about it a truly concerned or they just don't have the confidence as others may pass comment  As others have mentioned they could have much more 'serious' habits like secret texts to another lady or excessive viewing of adult material, gambling etc

I dated a really nice man about 15 years ago. Unfortunately he shovelled food in and swallowed without chewing and just kept going until the plate was empty, he also talked while doing it.

He really was the nicest man apart from this but for me it was a deal breaker. I tried to mention it a nice way but in the end just told him it made me feel sick to watch him eat like that. He took offence and I never saw him again.
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.
