Then your employer ships all the work out overseas because it just becomes too much bother. I am old enough to remember the 70s and what the unions did to the UK.

OK great, let's just all give in and [STRIKE]live[/STRIKE] exist below the poverty line because being paid a decent living wage is not a right, it's all just too much bother.

Of course none of this applies to the employers, who can keep their chauffeur driven Rollers and superyachts but clearly can't afford to pay their employees any more.

I'm off to bow and scrape before my mighty employer now, got to run in case he docks my wages for forgetting to doff my cap.

I have never been in a union and believe I am paid what I am worth.

You're one of the lucky ones then. There are millions out there in a less fortunate position than yourself. If you are unskilled or skilled in a job where many others are too or work is easily "shipped abroad" then you have little (no) individual bargaining power. Collectively however it is possible to have a voice and bargaining power.

but you can only keep being paid what you are worth if you get a pay rise that matches inflation

im not expecting to keep being paid what im worth. i just want 0. 5% every few years.

What you are worth will be defined by the labour market. Your value can go up and down.

You may doubt that a union can engage an employer in collective bargaining, however I do not.
collective is not one person is it, and like I say if 10 people get one and 1 person doesn't what can they do? The company would tell the union to get lost.

my boss is a bully and i work for a business of 40 people.

i am one woman working with mainly men.

i stay in my i stay in my job because i've been there 12 years... and have a mortgage. if you start a new job you won't have the same security.

i don't want to ask for a pay rise because i don't want to have to beg for money.

it gives me more pleasure to be savvy. My boss likes saying " all the favours i've done for you...."

i might want to have kids sooner or later and i have rights and he will have to comply by law.

At the end of the day, if you don't like it you know where the door is. There are 5 million unemployed...

I just bide my time. all bosses are the same.
