i suppose i should be grateful they didn't reward me with a -0.5% pay increase

out of interest have you had a pay rise in the last year?
No I was made redundant along with 3 others due to the down turn in business.

Before that I had a 0% pay rise but others got one as I was told I was the highest paid like that was my fault!!

I think you misunderstand. If a union has enough members in a bargaining unit it is legally entitled to recognition. If a union is recognised by an employer for the purposes of collective bargaining then the union will negotiate with the employer on behalf of a group of employees (the bargaining unit). Collective bargaining replaces the individual negotiations but since employees have greater bargaining power when they negotiate as a group, employees who are union members (or work in a unionised business) on average earn more than those who are not.
Trouble is that you get different people of different ability and work ethic all getting paid the same amount. How can that be right.

That's not necessarily true. There's nothing to say everyone has to be paid the same wage.

On the other hand, if A is doing the same work just as effectively as B, why shouldn't A and B be on the same wage?

You can not negotiate different pay rises surely for staff all doing the same job who get different salaries to begin with depending on how long with the company and abilities etc

I did understand the post saying the union can get a pay rise and they can not.

Why not! You can ask for whatever you want. Whether you get it or not is a different point! I'm just saying that 200 people negotiating as a collective is more effective than 200 individuals asking for a rise independently.

    They have been there longer
    Have more experience
Be expected to stand in for a manager

All sorts but at the end of the day you get what you agree when you start the job and that goes for anyone. A company pays what they want to for everyone.

200 people who do totally different jobs? 5 admin, 15 in accounts, 2 in operations, 3 in IT etc............

Even if you do the same job you are not earning the same.

What if 196 people got a rise? Then what?

No one will bargain collectively unless they are all getting or not getting the same.

4 on their own have zero chance of anything.

Then that is not doing the same work just as effectively.

E.g. You could negotiate an annual increment to reward length of service or experience, and an additional responsibility allowance for covering the manager.

This is wrong. Where I work there are people on £13k and people on £60k and many in between. And yet we have a collective bargaining agreement in place covering all these employees.

It is. I did the same job as someone but I was expected to stand in for the boss as I was senior. This was not in my contract or part of my job but expected of me.

I was just told DO IT!! No pay rise no nothing in fact one year I did get just that, nothing when others got 4% for knowing less!

A company will say 'you all do the same job' to suit them trust me they do , do it!

What happens if two people are of the same grade and doing the same work, but one is better than the other at it?
