    You've totally lost me now.
I asked if there was 200 people working at a company and say 196 get a good pay rise who or how will anything help the 4 who didn't get one?

You say collective bargaining but I say 196 wont bargain over a pay rise they already have, will they?

But you would be negotiating as a unit of 200 people, not 200 people minus 4. So this wouldn't happen because you would be negotiating a settlement for all 200.

It would never happen in the industry I have worked in. 196 have a pay rise so they would care because..........?

Sorry, you have totally missed the point. The union would negotiate for the 200 people not just 196 of them. And surely even if 196 only got a rise this is better than nobody getting one?

There would be no need to negotiate anything if you already have got the pay rise.

You'd be lucky to fins anyone I have ever worked with who was in a union. Wouldn't you all need to be in the same one?

No you wouldn't. My employer recognises 3 unions.

Still no one with a pay rise would be involved with those who haven't

I don't understand what you mean? Are you saying that the employer could buy off a section of the workforce so they would vote against industrial action aimed at securing a rise for the rest? It's possible but as I said before, surely better that the 196 staff get a rise and the 4 don't than nobody get one at all? In reality it's more likely that the money allocated by the employer for pay rises would be distributed fairly e.g. 3% rise for all rather than 6% for some and nothing for the others.

It's not buying off its called giving those who they chose a pay rise.

No union would need to negotiate anything for the ones who got one. They are the lucky ones.

Distribute it fairly? What like salaries are?

I am guessing you do not work for a private company?
