It's not buying off its called giving those who they chose a pay rise.

No union would need to negotiate anything for the ones who got one. They are the lucky ones.

Distribute it fairly? What like salaries are?

I am guessing you do not work for a private company?

I don't think you understand. If an employee's contract states that union x is recognised for the purposes of collective bargaining, he will not be negotiating individually for his salary. Negotiations will be made by the union on behalf of the whole bargaining unit.

I have worked in the private and public sectors, however that's not really relevant to the discussion.

I have never worked anywhere since I left school in 1987 where any contact of mine said they recognised a union.

That's a shame, however there's nothing to stop you joining a union tomorrow and becoming active to help recruit colleagues. As I said, once you reach a certain level of membership within a bargaining unit there is a procedure in place for statutory recognition.

Ah you have to have a certain amount of people in the union first....

Sorry, you have totally missed the point. The union would negotiate for the 200 people not just 196 of them. And surely even if 196 only got a rise this is better than nobody getting one?
Which would favour the low achievers at the expense of the hard workers.

if we could just stop things getting more and more expensive then we wouldnt have to endure all this bloody hassle and stress and dissapointment

if you had a job and could pay all your bills this year then you would be able to pay them next year if you were in the same job

there is probably some good reason for inflation but ive never figured it out

you are gonna need a bit more than 0.5% to keep up

Econmics - Inflation is an increase in the price of a 'basket of goods and services' that is representative of the economy as a whole. Also we can also have inflation and deflation by changing the amount of money in the system.

Iinflation is caused by a combination of four factors:
    1. The supply of money goes up.
    2. The supply of other goods goes down.
    3. Demand for money goes down.
    4. Demand for other goods goes up.
    Its all supply and demand
