Afternoon all, sfd - we did have plans but DS woke up with the summer snots so all cancelled - need to make sure he is mended before we sail on Friday! Anyway for the first time in ages he has gone for a nap. DD has been doing her mosaics sticker pictures - she bought a new box with her pocket money and loves them - not cheap but she spends hours on them so fantastic!! I have set her a challenge this afternoon to make cakes by herself. She is 6 and with one egg has knocked up a batch of 4 large muffin fairy cakes with very little instruction. They should be cooked in a moment - she is currently doing her washing up!! Start em young and Ill be out of the kitchen two nights a week by the time they are both 14!! A friend of ours had each of her 4 kids cook from scratch one night per week from secondary school ish. They chose what they wanted to make - she got the ingredients and supervised the first few times. They learnt to cook and she only cooked 3 nights a week. A very wise friend - I plan to steal her technique!:D
Anyway - work is carrying on - nearly there!!

HahaHe loves it! And knows not to touch the oven while they're cooking too. We made Monsters Inc cupcakes the week before from a 99p kit from Aldi.

I got my 1.5 ltr slow cooker, it's enough for 1 person. I can see that I could fill it and easily eat out of it for 3 days in a row, so potential savings there. Thank goodness I didn't get the 3.5 ltr! in researching cook books there is a lot of prep that goes into slow cooking, fry this, brown that, mix this in, boil that, all before you can throw it in the pot. I have realised what I need are 1 pot cookery books, where you just literally throw everything in, cover in water, stock, and or wine and then switch to cook.
I will be browsing Amazon, oh wait I don't have any money, although I could order and pay for today and by the time it hits my CC account it would be Friday, see how I'm justifying.
We've got a slow cooker too. If we make a special lamb tagine for guest etc we follow the recipe and brown meat etc. But for everyday use even if the recipe says pre-brown or pre-mix we just throw it all in and switch it onseems to work just the same. Some people even just take the meat/veg out of the freezer straight in.

Hi all...
Well - I'm off all this week studying - Hoorah :cool: The last few days were tough and at the last hurdle I tripped and fell... My food cupboard *was* pretty empty but I'd run out of stuff to go with what was left... and I couldn't face a week of living off cooked rice/bulgar wheat mixed with herbs ha ha!!!
So I have broken into my September budget a week early. Darn. What it means is I now have food in again... but - my budget for September will have to be adjusted accordingly.
Still - I am pretty pleased with August, in that I will hit my SFD target I'm sure!
Today = SFD number 18
Keep up the good work everyone!!! :T

mmm so much for not spending today!!! needed milk and toilet roll so nipped in to Al*I on the way home from dropping kids off at their clubs this morning - came out £98 poorer!!!! ended up doing a proper shop! Got quite a lot of bits for my mums birthday dinner on Sat - still got some bits to get but got all the veg etc. Going to take it out of next months food budget though seeing as it is payday today and I shouldn't need to do any more shopping for at least a week except for my Mum's birthday stuff!0
