On 24th January 2016 I booked flights for: 2nd March 2016 from Madrid to São Paulo (layover in Morocco) with Royal Air Maroc.
I live in the UK so on 8th February I booked a flight from UK to Madrid with Iberia. This flight is due to arrive 1st of March around 10pm so as I had to be at the airport for the Sao Paolo flight the next day around 7:30am I was planning on waiting at the airport for that one night.
Royal Air Maroc cancelled my flight a few days ago (both) to São Paulo and I have been forced to reschedule the Sao Paulo flight to 4th March and now, through no fault of my own, I will now have to pay out hundreds of pounds to find somewhere to stay for three/ two nights (1st, 2nd and 3rd) in Madrid as my flight to Madrid is non-refundable not to mention the disappointment of cutting my trip short by two days and I only happened to find the cancellation email (in French which I couldn't understand fully) in my Junk folder (the email did look like a fake, poorly set out and automatically filtered to junk because it looked as such) - had I have not randomly checked, I would have only found out when checking in 24 hrs before which would already be too late and find me stranded in Madrid.
Any advice greatly received. I have already complained to Royal Air Maroc. If you're new. read The FAQ and Vauban's Guide

I was delayed for 30 hours from Larnaca back to the UK. The flight ended up being cancelled due to a mechanical fault. The plane veered off the runway on take off when the hydrolics for the steering failed (literally feared for my life). Anyway, this was a few years ago and the airline has now gone out of business (shocker) - anyone know if there's anything I can still do?0

Personally i think thats a good thing. Airlines dont cancel or delay flights without a good reason, Do you think they want to pay out to all these passengers?? NOPE
I know i would rather get on a safe, late plane than a dangerous on time one.
Another question id like answered , Why dont we get compensation from the rail company's when the trains are late??? How can they let people randomly walk around or have no seat when the trains moving at such speed. You have to have a seatbelt in the car and on planes, why not on trains???
Anyway i digress!
Sorry ignore my last paragraph its totally off topic
I know a few airline pilots, and flight assistants and it is common knowledge that airlines play the "technical problem" card for any cause of delay eg flight crew hasn't turned up, insufficient 'planes available, and in one case, the airport was refusing to refuel because of unpaid fuel bills.0 -
Just thought I'd post my reply from Singapore Airlines to get people's thoughts.
I flew from London to Melbourne via Singapore; a delay at London meant I missed the connecting flight and flew from Singapore TEN hours later. However, they are claiming that the leg of the journey that was sufficiently delayed was a non EU to non EU flight, when originally I was under the impression that this wasn't the point.Thank you for your email dated 24 September 2015.
The application of EC Regulation 261/2004 ("the Regulation") to any given flight is contingent upon the criteria in Article 3 being satisfied. These criteria must be met before any detailed examination of the rights and remedies elsewhere in the Regulation can be undertaken. In summary, Article 3 provides that the Regulation will apply to:
any flight departing from an EU airport, operated by any airline; or
any flight arriving at an EU airport, operated by an EU airline.
Singapore Airlines is not an EU airline for the purposes of the Regulation.
When determining whether the Regulation will apply, the courts do so with reference to the flight concerned and not the outbound journey as a whole. Both the Court of Justice of the European Union Case C-173/07 Emirates v Schenkel and the English High Court Sanghvi v Cathay Pacific Airways [2011] EWHC 1684 (Ch) have previously drawn a clear distinction between the two. A 'flight' has been defined as a single unit of transportation i.e. an individual flight. Whereas a series of flights with successive connections is defined as a 'journey'. Article 3 of the Regulation makes no reference to a passenger’s 'journey'. Rather, only 'flights' departing from an EU airport are caught by the Regulation.
For the above reasons, even if your journey commenced from an EU airport, missed connections in Singapore or delays in respect of flights departing from Singapore will fall outside the scope of the Regulation.
In the present case, since the delay occasioned in respect of your London to Singapore flight was less than 3 hours, I regret that I am unable to agree to your claim for compensation. Despite your present sentiments, I hope we can look forward to welcoming you onboard one of our flights in the near future, offering us the opportunity to restore your faith in our services.
We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.
Yours sincerely,

Ostensibly it seems legit but I'm not particularly legally literate. Are they playing fair here?0 -
Hi Martin and everyone!
In 2013 my flight from Lima to Madrid with Air Europa was delayed by 4.5 hours meaning I missed my connection to Gatwick. I have contacted the airline several times in the last few years and they respond saying that it was a "re-schedule". They left a voicemail the night before the flight explaining this but being in Peru I wasn't using my mobile! I understand that to reschedule the passenger must be told 2 weeks before. I have put the details into the CAA online form but it's coming up saying that they can't handle this complaint. As far as I see this flight does come under EU laws - Air Europa is based in Spain and my flight was coming into an EU country.
If anyone can help advise me on this I'd be extremely grateful!
Thanks all

Good evening all, can anyone point me in the right direction or if any what action to take. We were delayed for over 25 hrs returning from Egypt in July 2013 due to the aircraft requiring a repair, once the aircraft had been repaired we were unable to fly home as the cabin crew ran out of hours. The Airline transferred us to a hotel for the night for the aircraft to fly us home the following afternoon, we boarded the following afternoon only to be told we had to return to the departure loung as the aircrafts fault had re-appeared. Following this delay I wrote to the airline who instantly rejected my claim, claiming extraordinary circumstances. I then wrote to caa who accepted and prompted the airline to re-look at my claim, only to be rejected by Monatch once again claiming extraordinary circumstances. I had almost given up until recently reading a few posts I do feel I have been treated unfairly and Monarch should pay compensation for my delay? I welcome any information that you could provide me with. Claire.0

Read Vaubans guide all explained. On the surface seems a valid claim.0

I am wondering if anyone would be able to tell me, based on the information I will presently provide, if I might be able to make a claim for a delayed flight.
I am in dire financial straits right now, so I'm desperately looking for any ways at all to get some money coming in--hence, finding this website.
I cannot follow the guides properly on what I should and shouldn't be doing, on account of my ADHD which makes a lot of it incomprehensible to me.
I don't want anyone to make the claim for me; i'm not asking that. I just want to know if anyone looking at this flight and info would be able to tell me if this was worth pursuing?

Flight was delayed at Cardiff airport, for reasons unknown. The weather was clear.
Initially, the plane was there on time, passengers boarded and were almost immediately made to leave the plane and go back to the boarding gate.
Then began a period of around 4 or 5 hours where we were told to go back to lounge, back to gate, back to lounge, back to gate...
Until eventually, they told us the flight was cancelled.
We were transferred onto a plane leaving the following day around noon (at least I think it was around noon), and were put up in the Holiday Inn (or whatever it was) for the night.
I'm not sure, but I think the next day's flight was also delayed. I'm not sure for reasons I shall elaborate on...
I know we arrived at the Holiday Inn late enough that the 'chef' was about to knock off for the night but said he'd cook one last 'meal' for me anyway (microwave fresh fish and chips). I know I was booted out of the room after not much sleep and my back gave out because of the uncomfortable bed.
It must've been later than noon because it was pitch black when we arrived in Amsterdam. I can't be certain but I think we were delayed again at Cardiff airport for a few more hours--I can't be certain because the combination of the lack of sleep and my back giving out made me sort of not mentally present. I do recall that it must've been around 8 or 9pm when I landed in Amsterdam, because I remember being the first at the gate for the exchange flight and looking at a big clock on the wall which was at around 8 or 9 pm. Whereupon the guy told me it would be there in half an hour. As I was brain-frazzled, hungry, in pain, and so damn tired, I went to the bathroom to freshen up for ten minutes. When I came back the flight had already left. The guy said he'd been calling my name over the tannoy. I told him he'd said it would be thirty minutes and I'd not even been gone 10! HE put me on a flight for the following day.
I know it must've been late at night when I arrived at Amsterdam, not just because of the big clock (which, in all honesty, might have been part of my brain-fuddled imagination) because all the shops were closed, all the vendors were shutting down, too. An hour later, there wasn't a single person in the airport. Not a one! No staff, no passengers, no one but me. A night alone in an airport with no food, the worst back pain i've ever had, severely sleep-deprived, and without any bags to get supplies out of... That was one rough night, I was freezing bloody cold, too, so took to wandering the place looking for a chair that wasn't deliberately designed to stop people sleeping in it through the use of strategically placed pointy, metal bits; I would've slept on the floor were it not for the little mice running about everywhere, who I took to conversing with and feeding my insipid, complementary airplane flapjack. I was actually glad of their presence; a well-lit building as big as an airport with nobody in it is quite a disconcerting place to spend the night. I was glad of the mice.
EDIT: Flight Stats has the first flight marked as Delayed 289 minutes If that helps?
Thanks. for reading.Len - you are likely to be in the €250 per passenger delayed category. If you feel unable to read and digest Vauban's Guide then you may have to use a no win no fee firm so instead of €250 you would end up with around €165 (ie c £120).
In first instance contact KLM and see if they will just cough up.
Update: £180 received today.
Thanks to the people of this site for the information and the help.
FYI: Process took me from 19th Nov 2015 (date i filed claim) to 13th Feb (money arriving in bank account).
I thought I'd succinctly say how the experience was for myself, in case someone else might get an idea of what goes on:
1. Make Claim.
2. Receive automated response a few days later; it provided no information and read like a simple 'We are aware of your claim."
3. No further response received at end of waiting period (around 2 weeks later).
4. Escalated case to next person.
5. No response at all for 3 weeks.
6. Case escalated to another department/person.
7. Again nothing for 3 weeks.
8. Reply received asking for information i'd already given in the first email to them...
9. Around 10 days later they told me i would receive a voucher for flight or refund.
10. Refund came today.
Thanks Guys.0
