I've been reading through the above comments and all i'm hearing is 'grey area' this and 'grey area' that. Let's be honest these EU rules are rubbish and pointless, cause it just ends up being your opinion against theirs which sort-off defeats the point of a rule in the first place.

I was delayed 3 hours but only got a 5euro food voucher. What about the phonecalls, faxes, emails I should have been offered as well? We all also know it's impossible to buy a meal in any EU airport for that amount, but they still offer you this!

Look at everyone's comment's, no-one knows what the hell is going on that they have to try to use forums to clarify things and still it's a "grey area".

"(20) Passengers should be fully informed of their rights in the
event of denied boarding and of cancellation or long
delay of flights, so that they can effectively exercise their
    rights"
Where would we be without the EU?

Can any one explain to me the difference between a flight delay and a cancellation? I notice the compensation you are entitled to is different.

To use my recent example, I was booked on a flight from Cyprus to London 18:50 on Sunday, but we didn't end up getting a flight until 19:15 the following day. The airline wouldnt even admit the flight was delayed until after our original departure time had passed. We noticed they were very careful to say the flight was delayed until the following day, not cancelled. This was all due to technical faults with our plane. If you fly on a different day, on a different aircraft at a different time but with the same flight number, is that a delay or a cancellation?

Thankfully they put us up in a hotel with meals, but we were pretty much ordered not to leave in case they got us an earlier flight. We also missed a day of work which I may have to take as holiday.

Any comments on similar experiences and what my rights to some sort of compensation might be would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a time limit for requesting compensation? I was delayed in 2003 (I still have the ticket)...is it worth writing a letter?

28 days just in case you're still thinking about it ;)

I had a 24 hour cancellation (downgraded too ) and managed to get £150 of vouchers(after a bit of fighting) which i sold for £130.I also got £100 from my insurance company.

They're not suposed to offer vouchers unless you request them, they must offer financial compensation. I discoverd this by contacting air passenger rights. I was offered a £50 voucher, then £100, then £150, all of which I refused, rather than £450 cash

This difference between delay and cancellation may not be obvious and each case may need individual scrutiny
Have a look at this thread http://www.flightmole.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137
It also begins to cover the "largesse" given by airlines to passengers in the form of vouchers

    Hi

My situation - flight canceled for 24 hrs; reason :- the plane was unfit for flight. The sun was out, no wind etc etc

We got offered a flight the next day - no accom, no anything... Company was Aer Arann flight was from Republic of Ireland to N Ireland (UK).

What should I do - write a formal letter quoting the EU legislation?

    Thanks

I was all set for my nice big juicy check, until I got a letter from AUC saying that the airline doesn't have to pay due to extraordinary circumstances. Extraordinary circumstances to me would mean if martians highjacked the plane  There's nothing extraordinary about a technical fault - is there? All this means is that the greedy airline didn't bother to check their plane until all the passengers were on board. However, AUC did advise that I could go through the county court. Has anyone done this? It's either that or flightmole. What's everyone/anyone think?

The County Court rule is new I think. The helpful people on Flight Mole I think said that the Attorney General had to do approve this route. Maybe he has?

  • I've just rang (Tue 8 July 08, 10:50am) Air Transport Users Council, they have said for ANY delays you cannot receive compensation, but you may get something through your insurance, but read the small print!

My flight (honeymoon) was delayed for over 5 hours, reason given was 'un-scheduled maintenance', on the flight we found out Thomas Cook forgot to book the flight crew! The flight crew we got were not happy working on their day off ...and that was the start of it!
