  • Having booked tickets a year in advance we were bumped off a flight from Doha to Colombo in February. We were ambushed when disembarking our flight from Heathrow by ground staff claiming to be taking us for our connection. 20 mins later we were informed we wouldn’t be boarding our onward flight. We ran to boarding gate (next door), where the flight was still boarding, 5 mins later the board showed closed. Apparently our flight from Heathrow was 13 minutes late but was still in plenty of time for the onward flight which left over an hour after our arrival. A member of staff told us the flight was overbooked and we had to wait in the airport for 7 hours. My husband has Parkinson’s Disease which is why we booked a short transit time. Qatar are refusing any compensation which I believe is unreasonable. Any ideas how I can claim?

I assume you are claiming denied boarding compensation. What reason have they given to refuse?
For passengers with special assistance needs I would err towards a longer connection rather than shorter. Often these passengers are last off the plane and a preboarded for the next flight

anyone able to find out why a flight was cancelled earlier this week

our flight from Stuttgart > Dusseldorf booked with Eurowings (EW9223)

it was due to take off at 14:35
we got told there was a slight delay until 15:00 whilst the aircraft was being prepared, at approx 15:20 we got told the flight was now cancelled.

    Thanks in advance

You should ask the airline. It has the signs of a technical issue in which case you would be due compensation.

We did ask at the airport/airline desk
all we got was a shrug of the shoulders

    with NO actual reasons

was hoping someone with access to flight data could check

I tried several times last night to enter the details on Eurowings delay link, but it wouldn't accept the flight details.

not sure if I was to early or the fact it was a 2 flight trip, with the first flight being cancelled, although the 2nd flight went off on time.

Last week my EJ flight back to Gatwick was delayed delayed by 5 hours due to aircraft be teched. At Gatwick I had missed my BA flight back to Glasgow. My problem for using 2 airlines. Booked a hotel and new flight to Glasgow. Go on line to EJ fill in forms for EU261 compensation and chance my luck expenses for flight and hotel. Withing 24 hours EJ confirm that they will pay the compensation but not the expenses, so say £210 (no complaints with them).
I now contact my Travel Insurance Co (Nationwide) they agree to pay my hotel and new flight, about £280. BUT now the sting, they tell be that they are going to deduct the £210 compensation I get from EJ. In my reckoning that means that I get NO compensation whatsoever so what is the point in EU261.
I have now taken this matter up with the Insurance Ombudsman. Has anybody ellse been count out like this?

Yes, I have heard of this happening. Have a look at your policy to see how (and whether) it's addressed. It's a reason to be careful about seeking compensation from the airline until all travel insurance claims have been settled.

    Hi FlyingBiker,

I be surprised if they can legally do that, although I'm no legal expert.

My reasoning would be that the EU261 compensation is just that, compensation. You are claiming costs and expenses from the insurance company, which I would have thought was a different thing.

With a bit of luck Legal Magpie will be able to advise with more authority.

Flying, a strong argument you have here is that your compensation is for your delayed EJ flight and nothing to do with your BA flight. Your insurance claim is for missed BA departure due to failure of public services be that road rail or air.

Unfortunately all I can give is a typical lawyers' answer that it depends on the terms of the policy. When you make a claim, most insurers will ask whether you have any other insurance that covers the claim. A good example is where personal effects are stolen while on holiday. They may be covered under both your home contents policy as well as your travel policy. You can't claim the full amount on both and some insurers insist that you claim on both.
Damages, however, are completely different. If for example you are knocked down by a driver and injured you can claim damages. If you have a personal accident insurance policy you can claim on that policy under contract. So in this case, while the starting point is to look at your policy, you may well have grounds for complaint.
