I completely agree that the media make out anyone past 30 is pretty much a write off when it comes to having a baby. In fact, two of my best friends didn't start having their babies till 34+, and one is now 39 and five months pregnant. She's had the viability scan, various tests to rule out Downs' and other terrifying sounding things they reckon older mums might be at risk of, the 12 week scan, and been told she and baby are absolutely fine. I'm trying really hard not to think about it TBH - let's all get on to the trying to see if we can prove them wrong© Cuilean 2005. Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental.0 -

My mum was 42 when I was born and that was 27 years ago, back then it was a pretty big issue!
At 35+ the risk of conceiving a child with Down's syndrome is higher but according to the NHS website over half of babies with Down's syndrome are born to mothers who are under 35. This is because women under 35 still make up the majority of the child-bearing population. Plus, those over 35 are more likely to have the screening test because they know they are higher risk, and therefore more likely to terminate, but younger mothers to be are less likely to have the test.
It might be true that "older mothers" are considered to have a "higher risk" pregnancy but that also goes for women who: have existing health conditions like diabetes, are overweight, are carrying twins, etc etc. That doesn't mean women with these risk factors can't have a healthy baby, they will just be monitored more closely because of the "risk" factors. My colleague's girlfriend has just given birth and because she's diabetic, she had something like 10 scans throughout her pregnancy!

My mum was 37 when she had me and 39 with my sister. I was conceived in a month, my sister two. The media puts such a stigma on it, but you never know what can happen!0

I had my first at just over 40 and am pregnant again now, due in 14 weeks both pregnancies have been relatively simple and conceived pretty quickly considering. Scans show my risk of a downs baby this time as very low again & I think I deal with the sleepless nights, terrible two's etc much better now than I would have in my 20's or even 30's.
If I was 35 I wouldn't worry about it a bit. Good luck.

So...big news...we've decided we are going to TTC from April onwards! We've both realised we are ready and were just over thinking it, but we're going to do a couple more trips and things we've been meaning to do over the next couple of months and then go for it
I'm starting on an (even) healthier diet and some multivitamins to get me ready.
Strangely though, since we made that call i now just want to go for it! But I also really want to do these couple mini breaks etc - I'm not a big drinker especially but I just don't want to be feeling rough or watching what I can/can't eat etc.
Very scary to have made this decision. If all goes well, it should mean I will be 27 and OH 31 when baby arrives. Which now actually feels older than I thought we would be!! I think it's frustrating as I would probably be actually ready for a baby right now, it's the pregnancy part I've been stressing over.Officially Mrs B as of March 2013
TTC since Apr 2015, baby B born March 20170 -
is anyone else anxiously scared?
I am coming off pill after our hols next month just don’t want to have a period while away! But I think its gonna feel weird, swapping my daily pill for a pregnancy vitamin, and I know the first month waiting on period will be a killer!!! i am happy in myself that it may take a few months but when it comes to it i think im gonna be a wreck every month lol0 -
Yup - definitely me niptuckfan!!Officially Mrs B as of March 2013

Can I just ask, I note some ladies aren't on the Pill. I am but I hate it (tried switching pills but they all have some sort of side effect, and I've never liked the thought of pumping my body with this fake hormones anyway!) and me and OH talked about me coming off it altogether. However, we don’t want to consider kids for another year or two yet. Just wondering if anyone has a link to somewhere I can read and learn about 'learning your own cycle' and doing it that way?0

I'd be quite interested to read too0
