It doesn't need a BG to remove a spam post, enough people hitting the spam button does that anyway.
  • When it comes to spam, spam software are using different IP's when posting, which make it hard to get rid of them totally. So, banning an IP would not do the trick.

My advice is to add more anti-span question in the registration process. Some spam software are not equipped or are dumb in answering these specialized registration question. So I guess, add some of them. It would surely lessen spam registrations.

A new one to me - this morning there is spam advertising soccer shoes under the credit card section. Apart from that I am not sure when to press the reply button. My thoughts had been that by keeping the spam at the top of the list more people would see it quicker and then it would become an invalid thread quicker.

Although those of us who are on MSE often know it's spam others might not. At least one reply saying Spam brings that fact to the attention of a newbie who is looking for advice.

I don't care about hiring my post reply number. Hardly ever post - don't take post reply numbers into account when reading posts. It was simply my way of trying to be helpful.

It doesn't anyway if the thread is deleted (assuming it's a thread started by a spammer and they are not spam posts part-way through a "real" thread).

Most spam is well known to occur at night when no one is around to deal with it, that is well known. If a BG (board guide for newer members) has abilities on that board it will be dealt with if they are around.

We cannot see when anything is reported so just delete as we do, and if we do it gets spotted by the forum team anyway as a matter of course.

There is nothing wrong with multiple people pressing the report button, but there is no point in spamming a thread yourself in order to tell people what they already know :)

It would be interesting however to get an official line frm a FT member, I am new to the BG thing on this MSE though every forum I have ever moderated says the same thing, don't spam spam threads lol

This is what MSE Andrea recently posted in another thread on spamming

    Hi everyone

Using the spam button and encouraging others to do the same helps us immensely.

I have to say that I'm not convinced that MSE takes spamming as seriously as it once did. Not so long ago, it used to be the case that almost as soon as a spam post was reported, it was deleted.

That doesn't seem to happen nowadays. I've seen lots of spam posts (and they were definitely spam) still visible on the boards 12 hours later even though they had been reported in the morning.

This may just be my experience of course.

To be fair, obvious spam posts are usually deleted within minutes of being posted, as many people click the spam button.

The thing with that is that telling people to report spam posts when they see them is perfectly fine; it doesn't actually say that Andrea wants people to post on threads yelling spam! lol
