I am also considering reporting someone for benefit fraud but am concerned it's not her but the system at fault.
I have known this lady for over 10 years, she lives alone with a 10 year old daughter, has never worked, drives a sporty BMW which she got 3 years ago as she is now apparently entitled to higher rate DLA ( can see no issues with her mobility) and enjoys regular holidays to Jamaica, USA and southern Spain. Her home is rented from a housing association for which she gets housing benefit, is immaculately decorated and her daughter, whilst getting free meals and equipment from school, has the latest clothes from Next and top of the range ipad and iphone. She is clearly getting money from somewhere and rumour has it she gets sent regular income from her daughter's father who lives abroad.
I work hard as a staff nurse and have none of these things and my kids have to make do. I'm not jealous, just angry if the "system" allows for this. To report or not - that is the question ??

*sighs*. A father supporting his children. Whatever next?! She is able to receive income from the father of her children without it affecting any other benefit.

How the hell do people know so much about their neighbours, if you feel she is cheating the system do it, report her, as she deserves all she gets. But please make sure it is all factual and not just speculative rumours.

I often wonder what my neighbours (think they) know about my life! Never ceases to amaze me just how much people listen to idle gossip and draw conclusions about how people live as a result. Nice wallpaper? You must be abusing the benefit system. Nice car? Must be abusing the benefit system. Ipad? Must be abusing the benefit system. Claiming DLA but still in possession of a full quota of limbs? Must be abusing....arrgghhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this person and her child are indeed being well supported by an absent father then that's none of my business and good on her and him.

My issue is simple - I would rather my hard earned money is stopped from being given to someone who clearly doesn't need it and should be paying for their own rent / kid's school meals / car etc.

I am bemused as to why anyone would think any differently

Report it, your neighbor will not know as the information you provide is strictly confidential.

There is a problem with your statement here. All facts, evidence are only be gathered from throughout investigation by lawenforcer who have the power and resources to conduct investigation. It is not her duty to do investigation but if she has a reason to suspect this is enough to report it.

    Here is the quotation
    https://www.gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud

" If you think someone is committing benefit fraud you can report it online to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)

the type of benefit theft you think they are committing and why you suspect them

As a former Police officer I am fully aware of evidential investigations but my concern was the word rumour was mentioned.

if someone that is KNOWN to be reliant on benefit, appears to be living way beyond what someone in that position should be able to afford, then yes, it should be looked into.
maybe the childs father is paying massive amounts of child support that enables this, but its also possible that they arent.

should everyone just turn a blind eye>

its ironic how many people like to jump on someone for daring to say that they are considering reporting someone that they think might be commiting benefit fraud, whilst at the same time clapping their hands at the thought that sick/disabled are having benefits CUT

but if she is living a 'good life' on the money that the father provides for his daughter, she is still allowed to claim full benefit. So you can report her but she's not doing anything illegal.

She could well be, she may have assets overseas she is entitled to, she sounds like her DLA needs looked at.

There could be elements that are legit and based on a stupid and generous benefit system that ignores maintenance, but it sounds like more is under the surface from what she says.
  • I thought all benefit claimants were genuine?

    This board indicates so.

Like all prisoners are innocent, right?

and all it does is make life harder for the genuinely disabled/innocent

i reported someone for benefit fraud today,

they are claiming disability benefit and have lied on forms to make it seem worse

they are also getting carer's allowance when she does not need caring for at all.

but she has told me she is getting a lifetime DLA award does that matter ??

    what will happen now?

    will they investigate ??

will she be called in or something ?

i do feel bad for doing it but i don't think that it is fair :(

how long does it usually take for it to be investigated?

And you have evidence of this, not just assumptions?

over 95% of reports are dubious. I'm not convinced I'm afraid and you could well have life for someone, particularly if they are a genuine carer, very very difficult. I hope you're proud of yourself.
