Mrs T_M - I have read quite a bit about wrapping/baby wearing. I am no expert in actually doing it since baby is not here yet... but this is what I have gleaned:
For a 'newbie' to wrapping a stretchy wrap is probably easiest. This is because you pre-tie the wrap around you before inserting baby. However, stretchy wraps will not last as a long as a woven wrap because weight of heavier baby will make them sag. They can only be used for front carries, with the exception of one brand 'Je Porte Mon Bebe' (JPMBB), which can also be used for back carries because wrap is wider and fabric contains elasthane so stretches in all directions and can be tightened properly around baby. JPMBB are more expensive than other stretchies and not as widely available here as it is a French brand.
A 'Close Caboo' is a good alternative to a stretchy if you are worried about tying in properly as it is basically pre-tied.
Woven wraps you can carry with for much longer and in many different positions, depending on the length you get. However, these are apparently harder for a beginner with a newborn. They can also be quite expensive - £120 for a new one in my size from a well known make in a pattern that I like.
I have ordered a moby wrap from Amazon to start me off, although I dithered for a long time about a JPMBB. In the end I decided that the higher price probably was not worth it since I plan to graduate to a woven once I am confident with wrapping.
It's about £40 for a new moby, though lots second hand are cheaper. There are also cheaper brands which do much the same thing - 'Victoria Sling Lady' seems to have a good reputation.
I would recommend seeing if you have a sling library near to you - we have one that meets fortnightly and will lend slings/wraps for a deposit so that you can try them out. It also means you can get advice on how to put them on properly!! Just google "sling library" or "Baby wearing" plus the name of your town/nearest big place.
If you use facebook, do a search for groups "slings and things" and "affordable baby slings". Lots of people on these groups sell slings but they are also committed babywearers and give good advice!0 -
Well we sort of blitzed the shops today, by that I mean we went to Mothercare and Mamas and Papas then I got tired. We did mean to visit Kiddicare too but the traffic was so bad it took 50 minutes to get out of the retail park car park (I'm not even exaggerating as it still took another 40 minutes to make the 20 minute drive home), so we went straight home.
As I've mentioned the travel system will be bought by my parents later and we have a moses basket and crib. However today we got two cellular blankets, a nasal aspirator, a baby grooming kit with thermometer, 2 bath sponges, two fitted moses basket sheets, 1 pack of 'green' newborn disposable nappies, a bath thermometer, 40 cheap muslin clothes, two hats, a pram suit, two pairs of socks, 23 vests, 2 baby grows without feet, 7 sleep suits and a dungaree outfit! I'm assuming the sleeveless and legless outfits are vests, the long limbed ones without feet are babygrows and the ones with feet are sleep suits but please correct me if I'm wrong. Can they sleep in babygrows if I put socks on them? I'm still horrified that it all came to £180 even though every individual item was fairly inexpensive.
We still need a few more 0-3 month sleepsuits, mattresses for the crib and moses basket plus more sheets, a feeding shawl, 2 pairs of scratch mittens, more socks/booties, 2 cardigans, bibs, 2 hooded towels, a changing mat, a bouncer, a play mat, changing bag, and anything related to feeding (which I'm confused about).
So am I missing anything? What do I need bedding wise apart from a mattress, sheet and cellular blanket? Do they go straight into grow bags or should I have just blankets? Can newborns go straight into these clothes even before the umbilical cord drops off? Do they need toiletries at first or do you just clean them with water for the first fortnight? I'm freaking out about feeding but I'm hoping the breastfeeding class next Monday evening will help. It was annoying to leave behind a half price Tommy Tippee kit with a steam steriliser, bottle warmer, bottles, etc, because I felt like I didn't know enough about what we need and how successful i'll be breastfeeding. I hate losing a bargain.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -
Oh my gosh this thread is moving so quickly.
Rummer - Good Luck with your LO I am sure you are in good hands.
Robots - I really feel for you. I knew that no matter what 1 in ?? number I got it would create a lot of anxiety for me so I decided against testing. It does still cross my mind though. I hope further testing will give you some reassurance and stop you from stressing.
Jox - A little girl, how lovely. Hope she manages to stay put for a little while longer.
Kerri - Don't have any advice but good luck with the eviction:rotfl:That is a very impresssive bump btw.
Bambi - The nesting comes and goes in spurts for me. When I get going I get loads done and then the urge seems to go away again:p Although I am still on the list for the 28th the consultant told me today that because of the GD I won't go over 39 weeks but as I have no other date to go by I have left it as is on the list. Hopefully you and Fran-o's babies will stick to the schedule.
Claire - My fundal height measurements didn't change for 6 weeks :eek:then took a big 4cm jump. I measured at 34cms for ages, I have three crosses in a straight line but the growth scans show him having regular growth. Both midwives and my diabetic consultant have said that it is not accurate it is just guidance.
I like to think that my tight tummy muscles are holding him him and take a little while to stretch:rotfl:
Lippy - Did I miss an update from Lippy. She is quite a bit overdure now?
I had the diabetic clinic and the antenatal consultant today. I have been put on metformin for the remainder of my pregnancy and I am a little relieved that I will be able to eat some more variety in my diet again but now my diabetic checks will be weekly instead of forthnightly.
I saw yet another midwife and yet another consultant. I haven't seen any member of staff twice. They confirmed that I have to give birth at the hospital further away - so we have to do a couple of practice runs as OH has never driven to that hospital and it is an hour and a half away - I will not be allowed to go over 39weeks because of the diabetes and she reviewed my growth scans and has concluded that the small measurement that was freaking me out was probably down to human error as it is out of alignment with all the other scans (and it was done by a student). She thinks although he is a little on the small side everything looks normal and healthy.0 -
What's the Baby Whisperer? Is that the TV programme? :huh:Hi, can I join you all over here?
I'm 24+1 with my second baby. I also had a MMC in January this year. My edd is 20th April, which is Easter Sundaywe are currently team yellow because the hospital here won't tell you the sex at the 20 week scan, but plan to have a 4d scan in the next couple of weeks
Mancbird xxxI'm sure I recognise 'you' from you ttc#1...? Sorry to hear of the MMC
I had 4d scan at 32ish weeks and although I wasn't really all for doing it originally (dh wanted it more) i'm really glad we did now
Sam, yay for the good scandid you want adding to the list?

I would've replied to more, but dh stole my laptop tonight ;) maybe tomorrow I'll remember some of what I was gonna say... doubt it though!Go ahead and assume I dropped in with some pearls of wisdom
Midwife in the morning... Thankfully dh had taken it upon himself to go sleep in the spare room tonight - wonder if me kicking him out of bed at 4/5am for the past 2 nights has anything to do with his purely altruistic decision? :rotfl:;)

Clearly I no longer need to sleep! Went to bed exhausted at midnight and as soon as my head hit the pillow I was wide awake. Tried for the last three hours to doze of with no success so I have got up much to the displeasure of the cats who were happily sleeping. They are both glaring at me now!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Rummer how dare you disturb their precious 20 hours a day sleep? Lol my cat sleeps in the baby's room atm as the door doesn't shut properly and it seems that there's a lovely big heating pipe for him to stretch out on.
I'm up now but it's the first time all night so I'm quite pleased, was getting up 3-4 Times before but this must be payoff for being punched in the food feeling lol
Kynthia I'm sure you're right about baby grows plus socks, I've only bought vests and sleepsuits though as that seemed easier. I really hope to breastfeed but bought that tommee tipped set on a lightning deal off amazon as I figured that if bfing doesn't work out I'm not panicking, just need to send DH out for formula and if it does work I can try to sell it on or use the stuff when expressing
They don't go in sleeping bags until they're a bit older, can't remember what the actual rule is but they need to be big enough that they don't wiggle their head down through the neck hole or something. I went a bit mad with cellular blankets and have 6but they were like £1.50 each from Aldi

I have been awake since 6am again grr. No pains this morning and thankfully my back ache appears to have disappeared. Oh well we shall see what the day ahead holds but I think we're looking at a 2014 baby.
Thanks all for the bump comments
Re: baby wearing, we've gota stretchy sling that can be used front of back. I'm going to give it a go especially whilst she's tinyDiary: Getting back on track for 2013 and beyondDEBT FREE 13-10-13 :dance::dance::dance::dance:

I'm 16 weeks today, and I've been coughing for 2-3 days. I've had a sharp pain on the same place you're describing since I've started coughing (and before if I coughed or sneezed really hard)! I'm guessing it's normal. Probably just more stretching/soreness.
I had this too for a while when coughing or sneezing, I'm now nearly 19 weeks and doesn't happen anymore. Hope it stops for you soon x0 -
For a 'newbie' to wrapping a stretchy wrap is probably easiest. This is because you pre-tie the wrap around you before inserting baby. However, stretchy wraps will not last as a long as a woven wrap because weight of heavier baby will make them sag. ........
There are also cheaper brands which do much the same thing - 'Victoria Sling Lady' seems to have a good reputation.
Fab post Ellie. I would second the suggestion for Victoria Sling Lady who sells via her own shop (google it) and through Ebay. It's around £20 for a basic stretch wrap which is great if you just want to give it a go. There are loads of videos on Youtube of different ways of tying it but to be honest we only ever used the basic one which came in the instruction booklet. It was fine for me (5'2" and 9 stone) and DH (6'2" and at the time 15ish stone). We went to a 5 day music festival when DD was 10 months; she'd have been around 18 lb and it was comfy all day.
We had originally had a Baby Bjorn type carrier which was nowhere near as comfy even when she was much lighter, and I have since read that they don't hold baby in a great position for their legs / pelvis either. For a more structured carrier I have heard good things about the Ergo (we liked it when we borrowed a friends) which much like a wrap sling holds baby in an "M" shape which is much better for legs. It is quite pricey though, around £90, and then another £30ish for the newborn insert.
Personally though Mrs T_M I wouldn't be without a pram in addition, especially if you can't drive (apologies if I got that wrong!) - shopping and things can be difficult otherwise. I know lots of people would disagree though!0 -
That's reassuring to know firefly thanks. DH thinks it's ridiculous as he said I've clearly got bigger recently.
I can't believe you have to go an hour and a half away! I guess you'll have to go at the first twinge, none of the waiting around til you can't speak thing or you'll be delivering in the car!
Mrs TM I'm sure we'll get a baby carrier but will be in addition to try pram/buggy. Think we'll use it if were going on a walk somewhere we wouldn't want to take the buggy.0
