I wasn't aware the sweep was something that automatically happened on your due date... is that normal? I thought it was something that happened if you went/were highly likely to go over.. Is it also normal to happen at your house? (Do I need to prepare anything..?!)

No she should be asking if you want one, not telling you that you are having one - that is completely your choice.
I never had anyone come to my house with DS to give me a sweep. I just had a regular appointment when I was 2 days over and she asked if I wanted one, so she did it there at the doctors surgery.
I will be biting their hands off as soon as they ask me this time :rotfl: I already know I will be allowed one early so I just hope it works!

I would just have a towel handy to put on the sofa (if you chose to have it that is!) but apart from that I dont think you need to do anything.

Glad everything is going well with you and LO continual.

Regarding sweeps, I would love to have one on my due date! My next app is weds when I'll be 40+1 and I've been told it's just routine pee/HB/blood pressure etc. their policy is not to do sweeps on first time mums before 41 weeks but seeing as I'd otherwise be induced next Sunday I'd like to maximise my chances of a sweep being effective over induction.

Any mums out there have an opinion of if they're worth pushing for? I'm pretty uncomfortable now so not worried about it being painful!

Think it just depends how 'favourable' your cervix is, which obviously you wont know til they examine you. I had one with DS but she told me I was already 2cm dialated, he was born about 18 hours after I had the sweep and I think it really got my contractions going. So for me in that instant was definitely worth it!

ETA: I wouldn't say its painful at all, just uncomfortable, but if your uncomfortable already then that wont matter much!

I'd second that they aren't painful just uncomfortable. They check the cervix and if its not possible they tell you so. I've had 4 attempts but only one actual sweep due to cervix being closed the first two times and position of cervix being too far back the fourth time. Midwife the last time said if your body is ready then attempts to start labour by sweeps or by induction is easy but if you are someone who usually has a longer gestation then inductions are more difficult. My labour started at 40+2 with DS so she believed induction should happen easily on my appt at 40+1.
Basically if you want a sweep ask, you don't need a longer appt or anything. Some midwives are better at it than others by all accounts.

And to anyone who doesn't want a sweep- you do not have to have one. They may offer you one but you don't have to have one!

They check iron levels vic, and do full blood cell counts I think. Not sure if they look for anything else.

I think ours are at home but I declined (and didn't get far enough anyway). Their timing generally dpeends on loacal policies but they shouldn't happen automatically - they should he *offered* automatically in a way which makes it clear it is an *option*.

I didn't have any bloods taken at 34wks - last time was for the GTT around 24wks. Mind you, I'm not complaining - I hate needles!
