Just wondered if any of the experienced mums on the board had advice. We're trying to decide between cot-bed and dropside-cot (it seems the cot-beds don't have dropsides). Benefits of the cot bed - bigger, lasts longer, more MSE. Benefits of the cot - drop sides to help with lifting and smaller to fit in our box room. We'll have a second-hand moses basket for the first few months anyway. Does anyone have strong views on drop-side cots against non-drop-side?!
We were loaned a cot with a drop side the first time round but gave it back as second time we wanted to have a specific cot that would work for co-sleeping. I did think that once we had it as a normal cot I would miss the drop side but I haven't found it the problem I expected. We keep a chair next to the cot which I tend to sit in when putting DD2 in and out which saves bending your back the way you would if standing.

Also, Ikea cots (which start from something like £39 for the cheapest so pretty good value) turn into cot beds but are smaller than your standard cot bed (they take a 60x120cm mattress vs 70x140cm with a standard cot bed). DD1 (who is tall for her age) was in a bed that size (we made one to fit the mattress from the original cot) until she was four and probably would have lasted till she was five but we changed her bed for other reasons so they still last a good length of time at that size.
  • Hi all, 27 weeks today :j

Fran-O, we never once lowered the cot side, just lifted DD in and out of the cot. It fit perfectly in our box room (was 120 x 80 or something I think). It was also cheaper than a cot bed. DD moved straight into a proper, 6ft x 3ft single bed at 19 months when she started climbing out of her cot and is fine. I've found that with baby equipment nothing ever serves every purpose so get the best thing for the here and now. I'd get the smaller dropside cot. Toddler beds are dirt cheap if you get second hand off Ebay should you want one nearer the time, but moving straight to a big bed means you don't need special bedding  Just my opinion though!

Fluffysox I'm with you, we live in a modern, centrally heated house with tumble dryer so never went bonkers with clothes. It is nice to have a few spares if you really CBA to wash and dry that day, but 6 or 8 vests and 6 or 8 sleepsuits is fine!

Abi I quite agree with the nursery getting ready feeling like the whole thing is real - we have to put a new border up in ours and I'm starting to panic about it not being done ... DH is so laid back (which is his most amazing quality :)) but doesn't understand I'm like Verruca Salt - I WANT IT NOW!!

Can't believe I'm moving up the lists so quickly - there's been quite the baby boom this past week! I just sold my Silver Cross Sleepover (proper bouncy pram) to a lady who's just had a newborn - can't wait for that to be me! :T

oooh you've had it good onetreehillgrrl. I've lost count of the amount of times I've cried, mostly for no real reason. Or I've got myself into a right tizz whilst OH has been at work, got really angry with him, then cried on him when he's come in the door. Poor man.

Well Kerri, I sense this being a likely scenario when he gets home. A live action replay of earlier events no doubt. :(

Ooo I have a Silvercross sleepover its currently set up on its rocking stand as I figured I wouldn't be out walking for the first week. What are you getting for new baby? I was tempted to buy a double but DS had walked everywhere over the Summer so decided not to. However recently he has been refusing naps so I've been strapping him in the buggy to walk round shops etc. Good for me to lean on and hook bags on to. We have bought a buggy board tho to attach to pram.
So tempted by Tommee Tippee machine... I was intending to try breastfeeding again (not successful last time) but finding myself thinking 2 hourly feeds that only I can do, when I already have a toddler keeping me busy (and waking in the night atm) might just kill me :rotfl: Still I'll feel guilty if I don't give baby some colostrum at least.
Re baby clothes, we do have a dryer so will put a wash on as needed. Currently we need to do 3/4 washes a week so with newborn as well it'll be most days I imagine. Count myself very lucky to be a 21st Century mum, when I was a baby it was all terry towelling nappies so more washing! When my mother and father were born, not everyone had a washing machine and there was no contraceptives so loads of babies too.
    Anyway sorry for waffling on.
Hospital appt tomorrow aiming to break my waters- if that can't happen I don't know what happens next ....

Ooh just remembered something else from last nights hypnobirthing...has anyone seen the breast crawl? Youtub it if you don't know about it. You put baby on your abdomen after they're first born and let them find the breast themselves, rather than shoving boob to face. It's meant to help them latch on. I've never tried it before, but it looks lovely watching the baby actually crawling for food. Apparently there's a natural instinct in them to crawl for the breast like newborn animals do (only thing I can relate to is kittens).

  • They're beautiful prams aren't they fluffysox. DD used to nap for hours in hers. My DD will be 2 and 2 months when the baby comes and I don't want to rely on the car for every little journey (I guess from your sig your little boy with be nearly 2.5 when you have your LO, but I know they come on so fast in the 6 months after turning 2 - if she'd have been 2 months older and/or not having a January baby so cold and icy I'd have done the same!) I got a Britax B Dual double but expect that she'll be mostly walking from the Spring. Fingers crossed your appt goes well tomorrow :T

Kerri my DD did crawl up (well, more root about) but didn't latch on very comfortably, although she did seem to be getting some colostrum. The midwives were a bit bossy though and told me I needed to take control and feed her "properly". It was amazing to watch her though.

Main reason I've just bobbed back though was because I was thinking when I was pregnant and preparing for baby I remember wondering and seeing others wonder how many babygros to buy as well as bedding. In the last few days we have changed baby on average 4 times a day due to sick or wee and poo getting on him during a change (my baby kicks like mad when his nappy gets changed and keeping his legs poo free is hard!

A few of my friends who have had babies have never used muslins, my baby had reflux really bad, I was changing him 3 times a day from birth till 6 months because of sick. And washed muslins everyday, and we had. 12!! Luckily we were given a hell of a lot of newborn stuff so I didn't need to wash items everyday. So be prepared, if you have a refluxy baby you will have a lot of changing to do!
Newly Married, not a 2b anymore!! Mum to two wonderful boys!
