Im fed up of the comments from people now, saying we are 'in for a shock' when baby arrives is not helpful. I'm not an incompetent child, I'm mid twenties and have lived away from home for 8 years. I know how to look after myself and Im sure we can manage with a baby.

Also if one more person asks me what I'm going to do with the dog or if I'm going to get rid of the dog once baby arrives I will scream. Obviously I don't know how she will react but I'm certain she will get used to the baby seeing as she is still a puppy herself. I'm not going to leave them alone together but I'm also not going to lock the dog out all the time when I'm there! My dog is tiny, smaller than a cat so it's not like she is going to be in the way!

I'm glad it's not just me – was saying exactly this to my husband earlier! Why do people feel the need to make such stupid comments? I'm mid-thirties and still being told this! Why are we 'in for a shock' exactly? I'm fully aware our lives are going to be different and we won't be able to go to the cinema and out for meals so regularly. We'll just have to adapt!

Also, apparently, I'm so big I'm not going to make my due date (30 Oct), we're stupid for getting our bathroom and hallway done now (I'm not stressed about it, why should others be!?), our car (Micra) is too small, and someone even said to me what are we going to do about the pram and the seven steps that lead up to our house?! We've also got two cats and people keep going on about how they're going to react to the baby! Rarr!

I can totally relate to this!! People (OH's family mostly) keep saying things like "oh you're in for a shock" or "oh how are you going to cope?!" and even saying that OH is going to pass out in the labour ward and "not cope" with the birth and a newborn. I know to them he's still their little boy but !!!!!! we are in our late twenties, it's not like we're a couple of naive kids who don't know what to expect!
Same with the cats - we keep getting asked what we're going to do about them, and people saying "oh well if they don't like strangers (one of my cats is very shy) how are they going to cope when the baby's here?!" Actually they are fine with kids and babies, it's floods of bloody visitors they don't like so you can help them cope by p*ssing off and leaving us alone!!!

  • Hi Ladies
Baby Patrick was born on Sunday by emergency CS. Went in to be induced on Saturday due to GD, waters broke sunday morning, so went up to labour ward, got to 7cm dilated (had epidural) but baby became increasingly distressed so was rushed into theatre for emergency CS, general anesthetic so I've no idea what happened. He weighed just short of 7lb so was a lot smaller than the growth scans had predicted.
Attempted breastfeeding but baby struggled with latching and I couldn't express anything (inverted nipples, agonising pain in boobs) so am now formula feeding. Been home for a day or so and am still getting used to things. Quite tearful at the moment still but that'll be the baby hormones and the huge amount of responsibility of having such a tiny little thing be reliant on you.

Anyone who has formula fed, have you used one of these? http://www.mothercare.com/Tommee-Tippee-Closer-to-Nature-Perfect-Prep-Machine/796566,default,pd.html?singlehit=true
Picking one up tomorrow (from toys r us where it's cheaper) as it seems to have good reviews and takes a lot of the stress out of making up formula.

Lola with our first pregnancy we told siblings and parents about 8 weeks with instructions not to tell their children (or anyone else) til after 12 week scan- just in case. Anyway DH's brother completely ignored this and told his kids as soon as he got home- and they promptly told their cousins. So this time we only told my Mum before scan. It was hard for her keeping it secret but I knew she would.
Not really bothered by bump comments etc but do remember it really annoying me with our first people saying they were shocked (apparently if we'd wanted kids we'd have had them at 21 not 31) or thinking we had no clue about how our lives would change. Of course we understood- thats why we'd waited til we were ready.

  • Congratulations Tiny_courageous! I've had 2 already but am feeling a bit daunted. Had a cuddle with a new friend from my antenatal class's gorgeous little man yesterday and felt completely overwhelmed. Big hugs. Xx

OMG does that mean I'm now 15th? Doesn't seem a month ago that I was 49th!!!

No news from cleofish yet? Hope everything is ok. She posted at the weekend to say her waters had gone and was getting induced on Sunday. Hope she is just busy having lots of baba cuddles :)
