  • I am 38 weeks and 2 days and sooooo had enough now. I have no idea if baby is engaged or not. Is there any way of checking?

I am up to 4 cups of the evil raspberry leaf tea, and no closer to sorting out childcare for my 3 yr old. Wish there was a w ay of knowing when it would happen.

1st was early but I know that means nothing, had a show with him 3 days before, still waiting for a sign.....

Sorry your feeling you have had enough brunnettegirl, im 38+1 today and I feel the same, this week has been tough and I wouldnt mind if she came now. Its my first so she probably isnt going to be coming anytime soon.

Ive ordered raspberry leaf capsules, as im going to be starting at 38 weeks does anyone know if I need to start slowly or can I delve in and start on the number of tablets needed for 38 weeks?

Zippy - It looks like we both benefited from going to the show then! I've done that so many times - set my heart on something then when you try it out you realise it's just not suitable. My problem is that I impulse buy whatever it is and then have to go through the faff of selling it! Well done on being so organised with everything else though.

Brunette and Cleo - Hoping things come to an end quickly for you both although try to enjoy the 'calm before the storm'.

It just seems really terrible, there were talk that all the babies were the result of christmas, (like that was an excuse), that a midwife had collapsed upstairs because she hadnt eaten and that community midwives from about 45 mins away had to be drafted in as well!
It really didnt fill me with confidence if we have to go in.

Is it like this every where?
I think it varies a lot how busy they are. I've been admitted a few times and one time I was kept awake all night by two women in labour, another woman was 7cm before being transferred, a lady waiting for an induction (broken waters - told it would be an hour or two) was there for a day and a lady told she was having an EMCS (for pre-eclampsia) within an hour was waiting about four. I've been in a total of 15 days and there have been three days with no ward rounds due to "an emergency in maternity" and when I had a late MMC we waited for hours to see a Dr because they had to call one from another hospital. But I've also had an admission where I was mostly the only person there in a four bed bay and that was May which is also supposed to be a peak time. I've had both excellent care and totally apalling care in the same ward so it is very variable. The labour ward seems to be considered a higher priority than the antenatal ward though.

Kscarlet - it was a pink sleeping bag and cost £29, so £14 after the discount which I didn't think was too bad.

Re: deodorant - if your worried then go to b00ts and buy a thing called Trust, you can get it in the deodorant aisle. It's a little pot of cream, you put a little on at night and it kills the bacteria that cause the smell, lasts a few days and showerproof. My OH uses it and he's gone from smelling really sweaty Betty when I first met him, to absolutely nothing now, the stuff is amazing.

AFM - baby was kicking like a mad thing all of yesterday evening and night, kept waking me up.OH and I were both surprised by how much movement she was doing and I was amazed at how far across my body I can feel her now, all the way from my pubic bone to my ribs shes definitely grown loads recently. Can't wait to meet her, but still 3months to go.

  • Congratulations Luciferswench. Glad you and baby are doing ok. :T

Cleofish - pleased that you've had a lovely year rather than what you had expected. We tried for 7yrs for this one and sadly lost a baby, end of Nov last year so this one is super special to us and our girls.

AFM - flexi day today and only 4 days of work until leave & maternity leave - can't wait! I have been struggling doing 40+ hours a week recently. Need to get my a$$ in gear today and pack our hospital bags and finish ironing all little mans washed clothes etc. plus could do with finding the baby name books as so far he is nameless! Eek how quickly are these weeks passing?!?

Has anyone heard that you shouldn't use deodorant while breastfeeding? Something to do with the aluminium getting in your milk? My friend keeps mentioning that she's not using much as she's worried about her eight week old baby ingesting it.

The thought hadn't occurred to me! I've been so hot and sweaty during pregnancy I've been spraying on deodorant and body spray constantly!
I suppose in theory there may well be some aluminium exposure through that route but personally I don't think it's significant enough to worry about. Fine if a person wants to do it but I'm not worried about it and I've breastfed for over four years now.
  • Re. deodorant, I was told to avoid spray and just use roll on as the fumes from aerosols aren't great, a bit like fumes from cleaning products etc. But then I prefer roll on anyway.
Still would have the aluminium issue I suppose, but if you are v worried you can buy organic, aluminium-free deos in places like Lush.

then today hes just left to go to York until Tuesday for work, he just left at 3:15 and i was almost in tears as he disappeared round the corner!
im not used to him being away and keep telling myself its stupid because i know there are so many who spend days and weeks apart very frequently, its just because im not used to it i think!
hes back tuesday night and then away on wednesday afternoon over to Oktoberfest with his friends until Saturday.....
i really should just enjoy the peace and quiet!

sorry total self indulgent moan, but i feel a little better now ive got it out!

Don't worry, it's hard to be apart from your partner especially when you're pregnant. My hubby went to the US for work for 2 weeks when I was about 26/28 weeks and I spent the whole first day he was gone in floods of tears! :o Seems so silly now, it feels like ages ago he came back, but it was a crap time being all alone and hormonal. Luckily I had some family round the corner, so it's good to know you've got a friend nearby to keep you company. Enjoy watching whatever rubbish you love on TV (I got through 3 series of ER on DVD!!) and he'll be back in no time :)

The midwives in my unit were also blaming 'that book' oh didnt have a clue and I had to explain afterwards. :)
50 Shades?? Lol! I didn't read it, so yet another thing my pregnancy will be blamed on that's not true! We only tried in Jan as we'd tried earlier in the year with no success, and I wanted to eat and drink bad things over Xmas :o so we stopped for Dec and started again in Jan. I thought it would take much longer to conceive to be honest.

37 weeks today! Eek! MW apt today, fingers crossed baby's in a good position.

I was a little disappointed that there was only 1 (that I saw) reusable nappy stand, but that was still a good start in helping us visualise how they might work.

Seems like I was wrong about the discounts! Going to keep my trap shut in future but glad you and lily didn't pay attention to me :)! I don't think I was in the mindset to go for the same reason as you guys... I was there for a mooch around and to see what freebies I could get with no intention of buying (there is always one...).

I was hoping for more reusable nappy stands too though zippy. We managed to get some great quality (clean!) 2nd hand ones through a FB group that are PopnGro nappies. They only go up to a certain weight though so we'll need to get the next size up. Bit annoying that they're not birth-potty training but it was only £25 for 30 nappies with all the inserts, a bin etc. so I can't really complain.

I got a little demonstration of the nappy that was there but £15 for a single nappy didn't make me bounce, but I think that is about standard for buying from new. They were cute designs too :)

Hi Cleo, I'm taking the tea and capsules; 4 cups of tea and 3 x 500mg tablets daily (hoping to have a super uterus by the time baby comes!) and I'm 38+3 today. I think it's best to introduce them slowish to start with however I got bored quickly and went from one daily at 36 weeks to two daily at 37 weeks then a few days later took 3 daily. Got quite strong braxton hicks that day and don't know if this was coincidence but I have stopped there for now!

I'm also taking evening primrose oil to supposedly soften the cervix.

Brunettegirl re: baby engaging, I asked my midwife. Do you have a 38 week appointment coming up? Mine was 4/5 engaged at 34 weeks then just last week has moved down to 3/5 engaged. Your midwife should be able to tell you where you are up to. I know how you feel about being fed up. I go through phases of that then panic that I'm not ready!!

Where's the best place to get raspberry leaf tea from? Does it taste horrible?! I'm not a fan of fruity teas!
