Has anyone heard that you shouldn't use deodorant while breastfeeding? Something to do with the aluminium getting in your milk? My friend keeps mentioning that she's not using much as she's worried about her eight week old baby ingesting it.
I remember being told ages ago by a family friend (this is when I was probably around 11) that deodorants etc. can cause breast cancer because of the aluminium etc.
Your friend doesn't watch the Kardashian's does she? That appears to be the latest spark of the debate on the net.
I think if it wasn't recommended or if it was actually an issue that there would be warnings from our midwives/health care folk (you'd hope!) and that local breastfeeding groups would definitely cover it as an issue.
Only thing that sounds like sensible advice around the deodorant issue is using neutral smells/roll on over spray... for the reason that babies probably don't fancy getting up close and personal with something highly perfumed. I'd think twice about sticking my nose that close to some of the spray ons out there!

Glad the baby show was worth a visit lily!
Not heard about the deoderant thing, seems a bit extreme?
Sitting here bouncing on my birthing ball, been having period pains again which is likely just baby engaging (i hope). It's surprisingly hypnotic lol

Until this afternoon when I've been a mopey so and so :rotfl: ah well. Joys of pregnancy. Just have to remind myself this is the last time I'll ever be pregnant so enjoy it....hard sometimes when he tries to come out my belly button :rotfl:
Hubby has a cold coming so he's sleeping downstairs so I can get some sleep tonight bless him. He's so thoughtful sometimes
Well I hope everyone sleeps well tonightnight night

I'm glad I went to the baby show too, lily (I thought of you as I passed by the pram stations
) I went for specific reasons too though - I wanted to look at some different baby carriers/slings/wraps in particular and at the reusable nappies.
I found the carriers very useful to see/try in person, especially while in my wheelchair, and the 2 I'd had in mind as our shortlist were actually not suitable for me at all today! One that I'd previously thought would be far too complicated and faffy was the best suited! There was a baby wearing consultant there too, who we managed to have a chat with about my/our specific needs too, which was good as there aren't any sling libraries round here. It also gave dh, who has no experience of babies (or their accompanying paraphernalia), the chance to see and experience the stuff I was talking about too
I was a little disappointed that there was only 1 (that I saw) reusable nappy stand, but that was still a good start in helping us visualise how they might work.
Having said all this, there's no way I'd've forked out £15/ticket to go! As my mum said, they've got a cheek getting you to pay to be be a captive audience for their sales pitches! They didn't have as many stands/exhibitors as I'd've expected either tbh - it said 150 on the blurb, but it didn't feel like that many to me?
Anyway, after leaving there, we went to get our (2nd hand/handmedown/loan) cot bed from my sister's and got a free feed - bonus!Once that's up and we've got a mattress for it, we'll have the absolute essentials for at least the first couple of weeks regardless of what we get from others/buy (a lot has been mentioned that people will get nearer the time/for Christmas/when (s)he's born) - the travel system has already been bought for us, cot see above, handmedown clothes provides all the vests and babygros and also handmedown leftover nappy packs and sample nappy packs etc. We've been given other bits and pieces too like baby swing and walker etc, but I'm just happy that baby has somewhere to sleep and something to wear as a minimum, as I don't think there's much else we'll personally be buying for him/her til we've received everything after birth and know what we still need/want - the MSE side of me can't stand the idea of duplicates going to waste

Ive been wondering the same about deoderant, im bf ds and every morning im paranoid i shouldnt be spraying under my arms, but thats for the smell not anything else.
Lilly- i bought an icandy, and i love it. Weve used it a few times now and its so easy to push. We got the strawberry in red. Part of me wishes id bought one i could change to a double if need be, but i suppose if that happens ill just have to get a whole new oneslightly optimistic as it took me 4 yrs to conceive ds! Lol
Still here..... but working on that!0 -

This made me laugh (not the period pains bit! I can sympathise there!) I was on my ball the other day bouncing gently and put my head back and closed my eyes. Felt like I could've dropped off to sleep! Obviously had to get up then before I fell off the ball!
Hope everyone has a good Monday x

I am 38 weeks and 2 days and sooooo had enough now. I have no idea if baby is engaged or not. Is there any way of checking?
I am up to 4 cups of the evil raspberry leaf tea, and no closer to sorting out childcare for my 3 yr old. Wish there was a w ay of knowing when it would happen.
1st was early but I know that means nothing, had a show with him 3 days before, still waiting for a sign.....I need to start saving so I plan to save £2 a week to start with:beer:0 -
Cleo - I can see why that doesn't fill you with confidence. Non-emergency inductions always sit behind women in labour or needing emergency sections etc. You get a space on labour ward when one is available and that could mean a long wait. Do you have any other options for delivery?
Thanks, as long as my scans keep on showing normal fluid levels they said last time that they will leave me to it, so hopefully I will go naturally and spend as much of the labour if I can cope with it at home! Thats the plan anyway!I think it depends, when I went in to have DD1 the midwifery led labour ward was empty when I first went in, they ended up sending me home as I wasn't far enough along. When I went back the next day there was 1 lady in having her baby. It was quite relaxed as you could see that some of the midwives had only just started their morning shift and were sat around having a quick brew, but I guess it just depends on luck. Btw this is in Cardiff and I don't think there are any other places nearby with labour wards. I don't know what the consultant led ward was like, they might have been totally chocker!
Im going to be going to swansea under consultant care but have already been told if they are full I will be told to go to bridgend, I understand the nhs is understaffed but not knowing where your going to labour adds to the worry.I don't think you can ever say TBH, it's no secret the NHS are understaffed, especially on the maternity units and it does seem to be the luck of the draw as to how busy they are when you go in. Suppose its like this thread where there doesn't seem to be any babies for a few weeks and then loads arrive at once!
I think September is one of the busiest periods (all the Xmas/new year babies). It was certainly the case when I had DS1, the woman next door to me in the assessment room apparently ended up giving birth in there as there were no beds left on the labour ward, and there appeared to be no spare beds on the ward once I had had him. DS2 was born in April and it was much quieter.
Same thing happened when I was there last time, a lady was waiting in triage to be assessed, i heard a midwife say I think we need to priotise that lady she seems in pain and then 10 mimns later she gave birth! I think she just about managed to get a bed!0 -
My hospital is expecting a massive spike in babies born there in October - something like 700. The midwives keep talking about it being because of "all the new year's babies" which is really annoying me, I'm due at the end of Oct so I conceived at the end of Jan, I don't want to be lumped in with all the new years babies!!:rotfl: Got my fingers crossed that the majority of that 700 will be early Oct and my little one will come at the end of the month, and hopefully there will be some beds free in the midwife-led unit by then!!
36+6 - full term tomorrow, eek!!!
Same here we started trying middle of january just because of my past history, to try to make a real effort, because of the high chance I have of miscarriages and not finding out until the 12 week mark I fully expected having to go through a few pregnancies this year and I suppose that was our new year resolution to just brave it out and try and try. We were very very lucky to get it first time!
The midwives in my unit were also blaming 'that book' oh didnt have a clue and I had to explain afterwards.0
