Congratulations Courgette and love the name, fond memories of studying, "To kill a mockingbird" for GCSE English Literature. And of Gregory Peck who is impossible not to adore as Atticus Finch <3

Re: cot bumpers my DS has a terrible habit even now of wriggling up the bed in his sleep til his head is squashed against the top of the cot. Was just the same as a little baby. When he was tiny we obviously would move him to the bottom of the moses basket but he'd end up at the top. In the cotbed we would put him at the bottom and although he moved up he didn't travel all the way to the top so I put a bumper on for a while as decoration.

Re: blankets, we have quite a few and some sleeping bags from DS. Fleece blankets are ideal for use in pram/ buggy. Indoors we had a brushed cotton flat sheet and cellular blanket. The flat sheet we would fold then swaddle baby with it. Cellular blanket used as needed dependant on weather. Then when DS was a few months old and nights were gettinv colder we started using sleeping bags with folded sheet and/ or blanket if needed. Always had him in a vest, sleepsuit and knitted cardi to keep his arms warm once we stopped swaddling and switched to sleeping bags. (when basically he no longer stayed swaddled). Recently at car boot sales I have bought two more of the sheets we liked and two more of the blankets. (All mothercare like ours- but white) They were immaculate and really soft. Then washed them on hot wash anyway and they are folded and put away now. Also got a Baby Tigger sleeping bag yesterday- lovely warm one and its really cute, so that's in wash basket now. Two "new" sheets, 2 blankets, and sleeping bag- total = £4. Bought some little fleeces and hoodies for DS for winter too and a coat from Next. So less to buy in shops. Forever seeing canvas pics especially winnie the pooh, and quilts etc. Yesterday was tempted by a gorgeous crib, like a large moses basket on wheels. Never liked our moses basket tbh, it was a gift and never looked or felt as comfy as the pram. But decided to be sensible as they aren't in moses basket long. DS will be ready for big bed soon. He is dry most nights now.

thanks nene for updating the lists

toothfairy is the pain any better?

AFM worried cos I don't have a cot bed. Just worried that baby won't like moses basket and we'll have no alternative sleeping options. Am I being silly? just keep thinking I can always send OH out to get a crib if it happens.

Congratulations to all the new arrivals! Can't wait for this one to get here :)
Feeling really achy, sore and tired and have had a bit of a show, so hopefully it won't be long now, knowing my luck I'll end up induced again though!

As for birth plans, mine is to get baby out and as long as we're both happy and healthy, well that does me! Have written a couple of things down, but I figure what's the point of a huge plan because in the throws of labour when you don't stick to it, or things happen out of your control you just need to go with it and not have something to beat yourself up with afterwards (something I've seen people do way too often!)

Still undecided whether to have a sweep or not on Thursday, that's if I'm still waddling about. When do you ladies get offered them? Last time it was term +7 and this time she's offered me one at +4, nice to know there's a standard eh?! :rotfl:

Hope you've all enjoyed your BH weekends!!
    40+1

Hi sitting, have just found this thread, and am due exactly the same day as you 40+1. Have my sweep booked for tomorrow afternoon so am keeping my fingers firmly crossed it works!

  • Oh wow Ruth, looks like a race to the finish line then :rotfl:
Is this your first baby? Do you know what flavour you're having?

Think I might ask MW if that's an option Flower, what a thing to be worried about eh? I blame the hormones!!

Benice I wouldn't worry about not having a cotbed just yet, like you say OH can go and grab something from somewhere and places like kiddicare do next day delivery, you'll always manage!!

Congratulations Courgette - pleased you are both well.

    Cute photo amus

Benice - personally, I would want and did have the cot bed in place ready, but your OH can nip out at any time to get one if needs be. This time round I'm using the moses basket for downstairs daytime sleeps only, as DD was never a fan of it. DD is still using the cotbed so I have bought this Spacesaver cot form Kiddicare, which hopefully she do baby about 6 months in my room before he/she transfers to DDs room into her cotbed:

    Wow, huge link - sorry

Re: birth plans - I considered donating the blood in the umbilical cord to stem cell research but wanted to discuss it with midwife. However, she was not happy I even considered it and said these days most women choose to wait until it had stopped pulsating, then clamp it and cut it. This wasn't the case 9yrs ago - it was just clamped and cut so I had figured if that little bit of blood could help other babies/children with leukaemia or even for it to be used as research, this would be a good thing? I felt bad for asking and am none the wiser! Last weekend at 30wks, I did a basic birth plan - hubby wants to cut cord, would like to use birthing pool if they would let me, pethidine if need pain relief - no gas & air (makes me sick for 24hrs) etc. not sure how I feel about students in there either.
That's interesting. I knew that it was better to allow the baby to have the blood - research evidence suggests it is better and the WHO recommends delayed cord clamping but when I had DD1 (six years ago), the MW I had when in labour went and got a Dr to come and debate cord clamping with me during labour who claimed that it would be dangerous for the baby if it wasn't clamped on the baby's "side" but that I could have my "side" unclamped if I wanted. It's a shame that the MW didn't explain the benefits of delayed cord clamping but it's good to hear that MWs are more positive about it.

I've always had cot and moses basket from the beginning but that was just so that baby was used to both in preparation for when we stopped using the basket. As long as they are comfortable I don't think babies have any particular preferences about their sleep location when they are first born - it's more when they're older that they can be picky.
