Bank: Royal Bank Of Scotland
Amount Reclaimed: £492.13
Amount they paid: £492.13
The story:
I wrote a letter as per Martins format and sent it to my local branch. I heard nothing for a month, so I sent it again........still nothing, until one day I received a letter from the Customer Relations Unit telling me to essentially get knotted and that their charges were fair, matter closed.
I sent a letter back telling them they were wrong, and roughly outlining my story (was into my overdraft, they then REDUCED my overdraft without my authorisation, and began charging me. I couldn't repay the charges, and they mounted up and up and up, getting larger each time, including interest - I moved banks, and it just kept on spiralling - I told them it was their problem, they heartily disagreed!)
Next thing I heard was a letter from the bank offering me a final settlement, but after they did this, they charged me again. I declined the offer, and recalculated the amount the owed me, and asked them to freeze the account. By now I had the Collections department threatening debt collectors and court action, and they wanted my chequebook and card back.
I stuck to my guns, and am now waiting for my cheque. The bottom line is, make sure you cover your own behind, and do not waver on your principles. Sending a copy of your correspondence to the Financial Ombudsman (and telling your bank that you have done so) also helps the process happen VERY quickly :cool:0 -
Bank: Lloyds Tsb
Amount Reclaimed:£4573.24
Amount they paid:£4573.24 (inc int & Court costs)
The story:
Started by requesting my statements in february. After 40 days - nothing!
Sent another letter of complaint and then my statements turned up!
Sent letter asking for money - standard 'your not having it' reply
Sent LBA - got another 'your not having it' reply.
Went through MCOL, they acknowledged on the last day and then defended.
Filled in allocation questionaire and took it to the court on 05/07/07
Had a letter waiting for me when I got home today(dated 05/07/07!) offering me the full amount.
Totally over the moon.......... these charges have caused me so much hassle over the years. Now I can pay off my overdraft and credit cards!!
Thanks to Martin for your amazing easy to use guide!!!!!!

I asked Natwest for £318 for bank charges and they have just agreed to pay it. I asked for my statements and sent the first letter. They have finally written back telling me that they don't agree that the charges were wrong and although it is by no means an admission of fault, they will pay back my charges as a goodwill gesture. I don't really care about who admits what.....all that matters is that it worked!:j0

Bank: Abbey
Amount claimed: £50 (£20 unauthorised overdraft fee, £30 for direct debit paid when insufficient funds in account) claimed on 16/5/07
Amount refunded: £50 - final decision 3/7/07
Paid as a 'goodwill' gesture, accepts that my being overdrawn was a 'genuine mistake'. Bank does not accept their charges were unfair, unlawful or disproportionate and states it will not continue to refund fees (mine)0
