Bank Charges Success Stories II

  • Hi everyone, first off thanks to all here on the forums and to Martin Lewis as well for the guides and helpful advice.

I've banked with First Direct for the past seven years and it's been a rocky road, especially recently when they removed all my banking facilities by mistake. I started the bank charges ball rolling at the end of May with my request for statements. The bank refunded me my £20 for the two accounts requests and promptly delivered my statements by courier at the end of last week.

On Monday of this week I sent them two letters, one for each of my accounts. My joint account asked for a refund of approximately £4,000 whilst my second account asked for approximately £2,000 - both full amounts for each account.

Today (Friday) I recieved two replies. On the joint account (£4k) they simply state that it's within the terms and conditions of the account - so I'll continue that one. On the sole account (£2k) they have offered the whole amount back as a refund.

I guess they are continuing with the joint as it's over some figure they use but I'm very happy with the offer on the sole.

    Thanks again.

    Claimed £3880
    Offered £2910

Decided to accept there offer as I haven't really got the time nor energy to continue with the fight, its 75% of the claim, which I didnt have yesterday so I am happy, Barclays didnt take too long either, got the offer after the 2nd letter so didnt even have to file a claim on MCOL in the end. They said they would have a reply for me by the 18th June, well it came this morning so they kept to their dates.

Many thanks for this site as I know I wouldnt be £2910 better off and yes I will be donating as soon as it arrives in my account.

    Best wishes

Can't believe it!! Sent letter requesting statements on 5th May, 1st request letter on 18th May, received a reply saying they weren't interested so sent letter before action on 24th May. Received a cheque this morning for full amount. Can't believe it was that simple and straightforward.

    Thank you Martin!!!

    Amount Claimed: 605.70
    Amount won: 383.48

I started process about 2mths ago. Got a judgement by default issued on 05/06/07. Received a letter this morning with offer of payment £383.48. Accepted offer and money is now sitting in my bank account three hours after accepting!!!

Thanks to Martin and the great team in holding my hand throughout the process and making it easy to get my money back.

We are off to Disneyland Paris this year with the money we got back. A very worthwhile treat for the kids after mum has been grumpy for the past 2 months hehehe

Keep up the good work and good luck to all those still awaiting their pay days xxxxx dawn
  • Bank: Halifax
    Amount Reclaimed: £1015.25 + £120 MCOL = £1135.25
    Amount they paid: £1140.25

Had the usual process, letters refusing to pay etc, went through MCOL, Halifax had one day left until the end of the 28 days. Popped onto my account online this afternoon and found they had repaid me in full!

I'm over the moon! Thank you Martin - you do a great job!
  • Bank : HSBC
    Amount Claimed : £162.00
Amount Won : £287.00 !!!! (YES THATS CORRECT!)

I asked for the last 12 months charges back, It's only a new account, they sent a reply within a week saying to bear with them, they were looking in to it. I was a bit lazy and didn't chase it up. BUT! 4 weeks later they wrote stating that they don't say they're in the wrong, BUT due to how much it would cost them in court, would i settle for £287.00 and leave it at that. ( !!!!) Obviously i agreed!
    Bank account stays open.

    MANY MANY THANKS!!!!:T

Thanks to Martin & MSE. Now hopefully the banks will reconsider the high charges and we can all make a fresh start in trying to gain better control over our finances.

Best of luck to all of those still claiming.

I'm still wating for Cahoot/Abbey but even though I can prove a manager at Cahoot signed for my 'special delivery' letter, they claim they haven't received twice! Stay tuned.

    Bank - Halifax
    Amount Claimed: £2750
    Amount Won: £2352

I took the Halifax to court for my Dad and won by default. Then just before I was going to issue a warrant he received a letter from halifax informing him that they were going to settle (of course, not admitting liability!). I got confirmation today that the money has been put into my Dad's Account.

If it hadn't have been for this forum and Martin I wouldn't have had the courage to get my dad's money back. There were a few times that I nearly gave up because it can be very daunting, but I persevered with the advice from you guys. If I can do it (a sixty year old technophob!!) then anyone can.

    Thankyou very, very much
