    Bank: HSBC

    charged:£30
    received: £30

story: Im one of those people that completely avoid being charged, using creit cards, getting charged interest etc.... Im 24 so havent had accounts for that many years. I had a student account with HSBC and out of the blue got a phonecall saying 'City University has tried taking an £8000 payment, but due to insufficient funds it bounced and we inform you that we are charging you £30'. I am relatively inexperienced with alot of life facts but... common sense tells me that a PRIVATE ACCOUNT which is MINE under my name should not be open to just anyone, even a bank to take money whenever they please! i mean, you own something and someone can just pick at it hwenever they want??? its outrageous and lacks privacy of ownership!so... i thought 'how are they!' (naturally). Being a first timer in this situation i idnt know what to do. I spoke to the university to unerstan what happened ad they said they were given my bank details by me which was fair enough.... after conversations and considerations with my university the situation came to this: I had to pay £8000 for my masters, but received a sholarship from a government body, and I informed the university of this NOT to withdraw the money at the deadline because the Foundation would soon be sending the payment from my scholarship, the university however had my bank details, and did not amend the information, so went ahead an requested the money from the bank (NOT ME!) and the bank took it upon themselves to deal with the transaction (without my permission!), let it go through, let it bounce, and charge me for it by taking the money out of my account automatically (whout my permission!) and then let me know what happened. I was fuming!!! spoke to the financial director at the university initially to get the money back from them because it was the univeristy's fault for not taking into account what i told them about my scholarship paying for the course. Accidentally, i spoke to the right person at the right time, becuase this financial director, he was clued up and told me to threaten the bank that i would take the to the banking ombudsman!! (I didnt even know what that is!!) i did exactly that, they got scared and for £30 they obviously thought....ok lets o her the favour. ACCIDENTALY it works coz i was not at all clued up in the past about this stuff! thank god though it worked. NEVER again do i want such stupid stuff happening to me though... its stressful!

I find all the threads highly interesting and am proud people are standing up for their right!:T

  • Bank: HALIFAX
Amount claimed £7090 (inc court fees)
    Amount paid: £6750

Started in March, followed letter templates to the letter (sorry no pun intended), finally went MCOL route deemed serverd on the 19th May.
halifax acknowledged and said they would defend.
Surprise Surprise £6750 deposited into account today un-annouced.
Well pleased as Halifax over stated charges.
To those of you doubting you will get your charges back (which I was last week) stick in there there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Halifax almost caused my wife and I to split with their lack of understanding about our situation. To be blunt they did not care. Only thanks to family and friends that we came thru'.
Thank you Martin :money: and everyone who contributes to this site.
Needless to say closing bank account with halifax tomorrow - moved to new bank.
Thanks again to all on this site.:j

  • Bank - LloydsTsb
    Claimed - £205
    Received £295 (!)

I have absolutely no idea why Lloyds decided to pay me an extra £90 but, hey, Im not complaining. They refused point blank to my first letter, ignored my second letter and eventually paid up when I made a claim through MCOL. The cheque was a week late though but it came (and cleared!). Ive been a bit of a lurker on this site for a while so thank you to all of you who have posted your battles with the banks and your success stories which have inspired me to start mine.

Hi,to anyone claiming from rbs,we sent our letter asking for refund of just under £5000 (inc £1000 intersest) on 10th april, rbs replied 2 days later with the we are considering your claim letter, after 14 days we rang rbs on the number on top of their letter, they said they had 8 weeks, so we said ok,we were going to send Lba letter but after reading posts on the rbs forum and also taking into account the advise in edinburgh lasses posts, which was to basically give them time and they usually come up with a suitable offer.Edinburgh lass always seems to give excellent advice, and yes she was right because we received an offer for the full amount less interest which is just under £4000,in the seventh week, just waiting for it to be paid into account.Goodluck to everyone with your claims,it's really worth claiming if you haven't already. A MASSIVE THANKS TO MARTIN AND EVERYONE AT MSE,ESPECIALLY EDINBURGH LASS AND NICKMACK,YOUR ADVICE IS SPOT ON.:A :rotfl:
  • BANK - Royal Bank of Scotland
    Claimed - £4899.37
    Paid out - £489937

    This was for myself

My Wife claimed £4799 from RBS
    she recieved £4799 also

Only problem was the timescale that it took - They quote 8weeks from the day they acknowledge your CLAIM -ie how much u ask for. They wont give u any update and keep saying that this is an FSA regulation. When the 8 weeks was up all they said was there sorry but is due to high volumes. Apart threatening to call them my offer letter and my wifes offer letter both arrived in the post within 48 hours.
Thanks martin for your letters and guidance - Almost £10k we have recd and are now taking our 3 kids on holiday, already bought a new car and cleared every bit of debt we have. All we pay out is our mortgage each month now
