Bank Charges Success Stories II

  • A certain bank wanted to charge me £28 for going 30p overdrawn in december, and wanted to charge me another £28 in february.

I marched into their branch and demanded a refund. They refused to budge, so quoted the Social Security Act 1992 (I am on Jobseekers currently).

Naturally, they refused to believe that saying 'the bank would take no actions that would break the law' and still refused to budge.

I reached for my phone and told them I intend on contacting the police regarding the matter and proceeded to dial the local station.
I was quickly interuppted by the branch manager who cancelled the charge that is due in feb, and refunded the charge from january as 'a gesture of goodwill'.

I now intend on getting 'gesters of goodwill' from the other times they have charged me while I have been jobhunting. I'm now currently waiting for a statement of charges going back at least 6 years to arrive and have no quarms going back into the branch and getting the rest refunded.

Incidentally I got a round of applause from the other customers that were queuing nearby!

I wrote to HSBC asking for £75 back (3x£25) last week. They phoned the next day to say I could have it as a gesture of good will. I know it isn't much, but it was much easier than I'd expected.

  • :j:T:rotfl:Just received a letter from my bank Abbey plc stating that they have agreed to repay me £6,904 in bank charges reclaim. I originally claimed £6,000 and was offered £888 pounds as a final payment. I refused this but they paid the money into my bank anyway. I then filed further letters as advised by Martin and used templates provided. I filed a claim of the maximum allowed in small claims which was £5,000 and case then went to the stay situation until test case is heard. Again on MArtins advise I filed a hardship case in February of this year and as stated have today received the above offer. Am I pleased or what!!!!! I can not thank Martin and his team enogh for all of the help given and am an avid reader of the web site for any more tips I can use. Thank you thank you thankyou again. If in doubt please pursue your claim.

    Bank: NATIONWIDE
    Amount Reclaimed: £630
    Amount they paid: £630
    The story:

Thank you to this site and Martin Lewis for making this possible. It took three letters, a hell of a lot of problems, being belittled and told that I was in the wrong and had no right to claim back charges as it was my fault for getting into debt. Most of it was spiralled.

Anyhow. I followed all the instructions on this website and it was not until going to the Ombudsman and them talking to Nationwide that light shone at the end of the tunnel. Infact as soon as The Ombudsman contacted them they offered all the money straight away.

My advice perservere and thank Martin Lewis and stand up for your consumer rights. I want to hear some good stories about banks, Nationwide I would not advise and wish to change banks to somewhere that appriciates their customers.

Thank you and good luck to all. :money:

Halifax tried to charge me a whopping £63 for going overdrawn a couple of quid in a single transaction.
The unhelpful sadist on the other end of the line had no sympathy for me, despite that being the only money I had to feed my family.

Reserving the right to do this in your agreement may make it legal, but it sure as hell doesn't make it ethical.

I left a complaint and then went into a branch and the lovely girl there managed to get it reversed.

I have been with Halifax my entire life and they make enough from me already, but it's not enough for them and they have to screw me at every opportunity.
