  • Just wanted to say Thanks to MSE and share .....
    Bank: Alliance and leicester
    Amount Reclaimed: £800 approx.
    Amount they paid:£355
How long did it take: 2 years
The story: Started the claim process in May 07 requesting list of charges since opening account in 1999. A&L deducted £10 to cover this at the time. I then waited and waited and forgot all about it. This May I was trawling through some old papers and found the response to orig claim. Now struggling with mortgage arrears figured I had nothing to lose. claimed under financial hardship and just got £355 part settlement. Looking forward to a positive decision on 23rd June 09. :j

On 17th june I got a letter from bank complaints, who are acting as my agents for recloaiming bank charges. The company says under the hardship claim (unemployment) ABBEY are willing to pay back some of money claimed, total amount to be claimed unknown but a part settlement of £953 is offered, they say this is to be paid into my abbey bank account to pay £238.53 clear debt AND £714.47 to be paid into my loan account to apy off debt there. Unfortunately for me I was declared bankrupt in december 2008, which closed all my bank accounts and wiped off all debts. I have written to bank complaints informing them of my bankrupcy, with proof of this. i have asked for them to look into getting amount owed to me by cheque as all accounts are closed by court order. I hope I get the money. But as part settlement this could in total be over £1000, remainder of money is on hold until court outcome.

    Hi everyone

I am looking for some advice please, my boyfriend succesfully claimed back bank charges from Halifax 3 years ago but we have had loads the past few months and it has put us in so much financial hardship (charges for going overdrawn by 3p ).

    Has anyone reclaimed succesfully twice?

    Thank you x

    Bank: HSBC
    Amount Reclaimed: £3700.
    Amount they paid: £2300
How long did it take: 2 weeks
The story: In financial hardship and proved it to them. They won't pay the interest but only the actual fees for now. Should the courts rule in customers favour they will pay up the interest as well. To be fair to them, HSBC have been quite efficient about it. They saw I was in trouble and have helped
Total Reclaimed from banks and credit cards so far: £14139 :T
    Amount outstanding £550

    Bank: BARCLAYS
    Amount Reclaimed: £579. £1670
    Amount they paid: £363.75 £1203.75
How long did it take: 5 weeks

I am bouncing around the house this morning, and had to say thank you and share with all of you our good news!
I wrote to Barclays asking for a list of charges on my personal, joint and OH's account, at the end of May, sent off the template letters and had replies saying they were looking into it on 4th June....today I was checking to see if OH had been paid, and shock of all shocks...yesterday Goodwill payment had be made in my personal account of £363.75.. and joint account had had £1203.75 (had asked for £1670), going to cashpoint in moment to check OH's bank account, we had asked for £2028.23 for his charges.

How fantastic is this.....thank you all for posting on here, you gave me the guts to ask for these charges, and using Martins template letters we now have cleared our overdrafts, and got these charges back from Barclays.....

Dont give up if you are chasing your charges, and if you havent started chasing your charges just give it a go....

I will keep you updated on the letters I have sent to Barclaycard, and Capital One....

What a lovely day today is!

Forgot to say we went down the hardship route as I had lost my job and we had got into arrears with the mortgage and loans and credit cards, I just sent them our own income and expenditure spread sheet, showing how much arrears we had and how we had more money going out than coming in.

Thank you so much Martin, I followed the instructions on this website for financial hardship with Natwest bank. It has taken around 6 weeks since I first wrote to them claiming hardship. On saturday I had a letter back from them after sending them proof of bills and income around 3 weeks ago (my much reduced income this year) and they have offered me £5,568!!!

I had asked for £5090 through the court system which included inertrest in 2007 but the case was put on hold around 1 week before 'my' case happened. Natwest have been very understanding of my changed circumstances and have been very helpful on the phone, they have left my overdraft in place and just asked for my switch card and cheque book back, they have sent me a solo card so that I can still use the account and they have told me there will be no further charges or int added to this account until the OFT case has ended or for 2 years.

I cannot start to thank you enough Martin this money will make such a big difference to me at the moment, the timing really could not be any better. Natwest asked me to return a slip to accept the offer and say to allow up to 21 days for the credit, but the nice lady on the phone told me that 7 days is more normal.

    Thank you again XXX
  • Bank: Barclays
Amount claimed: Approx £60-£80 (I didn't think to keep my copy of the original breakdown I mailed over, so I can't remember the exact amount)
    Amount received: £630
    The story:
Sent off my first letter (template downloaded from money saving expert, of course) March '08, at which point the test case was already underway, I think. Declared myself a hardship case which was by no means an exaggeration! Worked out my claim amount by deducting the amount by which I'd gone overdrawn each time, by the amount charged - and opted to not apply interest, despite claiming back over the previous six years. During the remainder of 2008, received a few acknowledgement letters about my claim, but no real response. Then this April, I received a budger planner - which I filled in as accurately as poss, and returned. Within a month and a half from returning the budget planner, I was paid out - over five times beyond what I'd claimed for! The bank never wrote to me advising on their decision, and I only discovered the amount had been put into my account when I checked my balance at the bank one day.

I will, of course, be claiming for the period after March '08 too... :o)
