Here's a comparison that offers a good summing-up between the two budget phones (Huawei Vision U8850* and Huawei Y300):

    http://www.smartprix.com/mobiles/huawei_ascend_y300_vs_huawei_u8850_vision-c2839_2293.php

*The Huawei Vision U8850 is currently £39.99 PAYG Upgrade price at Phones4U, which is a brilliant budget option too. Phones4U phones are all unlocked too.

Unlock codes on Ebay are less than £4 from Korter-gsm who was good for unlocking the G300's

Huawei site says 1GB free for user which is enough for plenty of apps if you keep data on a decent speed SD card.

Wonder if there is a rooting solution for this phone yet? having a good clear out could probably free a huge amount, especially any network branding apps.

I don't think only 512MB ram will kill it, since ICS memory management has been a lot better on Android - its still half a gigabyte!

The compass is a novelty when using Google Streetview but its not vital. Bigger shame is the video camera function is still only VGA. With a 5MP camera sensor it really should be able to film in higher than just VGA.

Just a pity I don't have anything to access the upgrade offer with or I would switch from my G300 for £59!

I tried using my GiffGaff SIM on the CPW Upgrade page (selected O2) but it didn't work. Kinda knew it wouldn't but worth a go.

The only person I know who isn't on GiffGaff or doesn't have a contract is my dear mum! So I'll have to wait. Still not sure which Huawei I'll go for as a back-up (my boyf can use it until he replaces the Android he had, sadly, pickpocketed from him!).

XDA root for the Y300: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290610

Bootloader Unlock code from Huawei: bootloader unlock code direct from Huawei at http://www.huaweidevice.com/worldwide/servicePolicy.do?method=toApplyUnlock

Edit: Further to the XDA link I posted earlier, this from HUKD: "This root worked perfect for me, the only part they failed to advise of is that you need to disable "Fast Boot" before you do anything. (Settings>All>Disable Fast Boot).
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290610 " - ProPiers @HUKD.

"When rooted you can use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rs.autokiller&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5ycy5hdXRva2lsbGVyIl0. it changes androids LMK (low memory killer) and makes it so you don't get a snarl up due to low free ram being available." - stonebear @HUKD."

    30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee
We're so confident customers will love this phone, we're offering an extended 30 days change of mind satisfaction guarantee. This means you can try the Y300 for up to 30 days, and if you don't get along - simply return for a full refund on pay as you go or exchange on pay monthly. Click here for full terms and conditions and more information.

If you’re looking for the best budget smartphone around, here it is. With powerful hardware, a good looking screen, strong design, a ton of easy to use features and access to hundreds of thousands of apps, the Huawei Ascend Y300 is a great little purchase.

Re the "30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee", J_Staunton is saying Orange and T-Mobile users CAN'T return the phone within 30 days for a refund, unless there's a fault. Don't you hate it when there's a caveat.

alf, makes a very good point, I have a Lg android phone with a very small memory and it s a nightmare trying to update apps, download them and juggling the small amount of memory you do have, also apps are getting bigger and bigger.

Re the "0.8GB only available for apps" (saw it on a review somewhere too and can't remember where), I assume adding a MicroSD card solves this. I've asked Y300 users on HUKD anyway.

32GB Micro SD mentioned on HUKD today: http://www.gizzmoheaven.com/Transcend-32GB-microSDHC-Class-10-UHS-I-Flash-Memory-Card-with-Adapter/s... £15.17 delivered with code PAYPAL15 (comes with SD Adapter). Was £12.99 at Play not long ago, though.

I've had a Transcend JetFlash pen drive for over a year, and it's great.

Apparently you can change the Default Storage Location from Internal to MicroSD Card. (only saying "apparently" as I've been told that on HUKD and I don't have this phone!). Assume that solves it?

Cnet elaborates on it a bit more: http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/huawei-ascend-y300-jelly-bean-blower-hits-uk-for-60-50011418/

"The biggest downside to the Y300 is how little space there is for apps -- a minuscule 0.8GB. While you can expand the storage by 32GB with a microSD card, you can't install apps on that, just store photos and music and so on."

I'm an app-hound so that would definitely be an issue for me. I don't know if rooting the phone (I have no root experience as I'm too scared I'll brick a phone!!) would solve this, with the addition of Apps2SD*.

    *Edit: Apps2SD doesn't work with Android 4.1.

I'll update when I find out more.

I suspect Link2SD would work very nicely if rooted.

From Hotukdeals' member mdinch: "I bought mine yesterday and been downloading and installing my apps. I can confirm that I am able to install most apps on to SD card.

Just to clarify, most apps will install on SD card, some will install on internal memory but can be moved to SD card and some will install on internal memory which cannot be moved to SD card."
