I posted this on Hotukdeals too, and think it'll be of interest to MSErs looking for a budget 'droid.

This is being released tomorrow at CPW (Carphone Warehouse), 6th June, for £59.95 PAYG upgrade (£69.95 new customers) or £7 on monthly contract.

"The Ascend Y300 smartphone debuts in the CPW tomorrow and will be available in black from £59.95 on prepay and from £7 per month on contract..four inch screen, 1GHz dual-core processor and comes with a five mega pixel camera with auto-focus, flash, panorama function and video record at 30 frames per second. It runs Android 4.1 Jellybean operating system."

Scratch-resistant glass and takes MicroSD cards up to 32GB. Camera has an LED flash, VGA front camera. 4GB internal memory, 512MB RAM.

PS: From Trusted Reviews: "The Huawei Ascend Y300 features a 4-inch IPS LCD touchscreen with 480 x 800p resolutions and a 233ppi image density. Packing a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor...

In the rear, the Huawei Ascend Y300 has a 5-megapixel camera and a VGA snapper up front. It has a 1730mAh lithium-ion battery, (osstis & dewey2 from HUKD say it has a 1950mAh battery), which incorporates Huawei’s power saving technology to improve the battery life by 30%.

Running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the smartphone has access to the full range of Google Play apps and games and features Huawei’s Emotion UI."

PPS: aramaj36 just updated with this: "..It will be available for £59.95 for customers upgrading on prepay, and for £69.95 for new prepay customers, inclusive of a £10 top-up. The Ascend Y300 will also be available from £7 per month on contract."

PPPS: "..to get the Upgrade price (£59.95) you have to have topped up in the last six months, CPW check the PAYG SIM serial and the number (correct me if I'm wrong). It wouldn't work for GiffGaff or Ovivo customers. Maybe get a friend to go in with their PAYG SIM?
Contract SIMs don't apply for the upgrade offer."

*Apparently Phones4U are usually fine if you quote a PAYG number, Carphone Warehouse ask for the PAYG SIM's serial number to get the PAYG Upgrade price.

**The Y300 DOESN'T have a digital compass, and doesn't have Adobe Flash (there are ways round it, eg, you can use Flash as an add-on on Mozilla Firefox, Dolphin, Maxthon browser...and others).

*****"It has a notification LED although it's not as bright as the one on the G300" - thanks, dewey2 at HUKD.

Something a HUKDer pointed out that I didn't realise: This phone doesn't support Flash.

However, all is not lost: You can add Adobe Flash to Mozilla Firefox (mobile version, of course) as an add-on. http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/google-android/3417930/how-get-flash-in-android-jelly-bean/

Maxthon Browser (my favourite), Dolphin (apparently an older version supports Flash) and others can sideload Flash too.

Plus it has just 512mb of RAM - that really isn't enough for JB and the phone will clog up and become sluggish quickly.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

It's a budget 'droid. You can't expect the earth. We'll see what the feedback is from those who picked one up today, and I'll update.

They're also saying on HUKD the phone doesn't have a digital compass, which is a bit odd, but I'll have to look around and see if I can confirm it.

alf, makes a very good point, I have a Lg android phone with a very small memory and it s a nightmare trying to update apps, download them and juggling the small amount of memory you do have, also apps are getting bigger and bigger.

(From HUKD) re the compass, or lack of: "Google Maps/Navigation only require GPS which this has. Compass is only needed for augmented reality apps." - thanks to lhassall

Bear in mind I have no idea what an Android is like without a compass, so I'm only going by what I'm told on the HUKD threads.

I suppose it's best to wait until there are more opinions out there, if anyone's interested in this phone. The (lack of) RAM doesn't seem to be an issue from the feedback I've read so far.
