Problem is it is Fraud and the only people that got done over would have been royal mail. I imagine that the seller then went on to claim that the items never arrived and got their own refund from royal mail.0 -

I am leaning towards actually being on Chrissie's side on this occasion, even though what she did was technically wrong, and not something I would recommend people do on a regular basis! ... In her case, the amount the seller charged for postage, (twenty pounds in total,) was disgusting, when it only cost four pounds ... Plus, both items were shoved in a thin and useless box and arrived damaged, after he promised to deliver the two items individually and securely with special delivery.
So I must admit, I would've been tempted to do the same: just say they never got here. I am sure a few people do that quite regularly and many people have done it at least once or twice! So people being all judgemental like their poop don't stink and like they have never done anything 'naughty' makes me laugh TBH. Say you don't agree with it by all means, but don't act all holier-than-thou.
If she had opened a dispute, it may be that because the items got to her OK, she may have struggled to get some of the postage back: it's a grey area. Plus, the bad packaging resulted in the items being damaged. Yes, she could have demanded a full refund, but is not necessarily likely to have got it. And from what I calculate, it was sixty quid in total! Maybe not the best way to deal with it, but I am sure many people would have been tempted to do the same after being over charged so dramatically!
It is not something I would endorse on a regular basis though! But as I said, I am sure almost everyone has done this at least ONCE in their life. My cousin ordered some Christmas lights (the LED ones) several years ago, for forty pounds in total, and it was 4th November she ordered them (from a catalogue.) Anyway, they still weren't here within 4 weeks, when she wanted to put them up. They had said they would be 21 days delievery.
They still weren't here by 15th December!!! So she went out and bought some from B & Q which cost about 25% more, so she spent £50. And knock me down with a feather; the next day, the lights came from the catalogue. However, the courier had dumped them in front of her 4 foot back fence (at the back of the drive,) and pushed a card through the door saying 'parcel on drive.' ANYone could have nicked them, and it was hammering down with rain!!!
So when the invoice came which included the price of the lights, she rang them and said she never ever got them. There was a record of 3 calls she had made to them between 28th November and the 15th December. When she rang them in January to say she never got them, she said she called 3 times and waited 6 weeks, and then gave up and got some from elsewhere. So they knocked them off the bill. Once again though, the only time she ever did something like that (that I know of LOL)
Useless and poor service deserves to have the occasional bit of revenge, if it's possible to do it without being caught.0 -
but there is the option of not buying
or if the item is that important to you pay what it takes to get it
Anything? Whatever a seller fancies? No, I won't do that.
Sellers should charge fair and accurate P&P.
The point is if they charge over the odds they will lose their ratings, sellers will leave low stars.0 -
Why do people get worked up about Ebay sellers charging shipping at above cost, but seem OK to pay the fixed charges of around £8.00 that some of the shopping channels charge?0

Seems a very strange act to knowingly go with the deal and then complain about it afterwards.
If I agree a price with someone I would never go back on or bicker about it. Seems rather dishonest.0 -
Are these stars really that important? I never take any notice when buying and will probably ignore completely after this (to me) educational thread.0

That's ridiculous. You were not "overcharged". You knew exactly how much the postage was when you bidded and you chose to go ahead with your bid. If the overcharge was £5, it'd be understandable, but the overcharge is £1.20, and how do you know the poster didn't use that for petrol to travel to the post office?
Sorry but I don't think there's any way that it'd be fair for them to refund you the £1.20.0 -

The stars were introduced as a self regulating measure to get rid of the type of seller Ebay customers don't like. Slow posters, overcharging postage, poor/misleading descriptions, poor/bad communication.
I don't think buyers need to pay that much attention to them, their feedback should be enough..0 -

Yes, if you get three (roughly) low stars 1's or 2's your selling performance drops on postage and means your account is restricted. You cannot list for free on free listing weekends and if you do not improve they suspend your account. This is for a small private seller, larger ones would need more low scores to be affected.0 -
They only get to leave stars if they buy.

You agree a price based on what they say they will pay for P&P. If they do not actually pay that they have not kept to their part of the bargain.0
