No idea why, the problem is that buyers do judge sellers against each other when leaving stars. For everyone like you who will leave 5* regardless of how much p and P you were charged, there will be more that consider the costs and whether they feel they are reasonable based against their experience of other sellers on ebay. Have you never even considered stars when you leave them, or do you just leave 5* with no judgement call at all?

If every buyer left 5* regardless then then none of us sellers here would be worrying about our stars.
If one seller is selling at at £15.00 with £5.00 P&P and another at£18.00 plus £2.00 p & P. Why would I or anyone else give them diffferent ratings?

You can only say what you would give. There is no way you can second guess the reason another buyer may do differently.

If the postage paid is a 50p second class stamp and you've paid £5.00 for it I could understand why someone who had not seen any other items listed would be annoyed and mark the seller down.

I'd say in the above scenario, if the Royal Mail charge is £2 then the seller charging £5 will have lower postage ratings on Ebay.

I'm not sure that I've ever even checked the stamp/franking when I've bought something online, I'd bet at least half my customers do.

On Amazon I used to sell a range of similar items that were 99p postage and free additional postage to encourage multiple purchases. If they went in single items I could send some of them by second class letter, I very rarely sold just one, but as soon as I did I had a complaint that I'd doubled up on the postage. No one ever complained when I sent 20 items and Royal Mail charge was over £3.

Don't try and rationalise the general public, they're all flipping stupid (no offense everyone;)).

I have just posted on another similar thread. It has happened again. Cost £2.60 plus plastic bag, total £3.00, I have paid £7.

It seems it is becoming common that sellers are putting the highest available postage cost on goods which cost so much less to post. When buying one off items of clothing there is no option of buying from another seller.

So, should I just accept the overcharge, ask for a refund (without mentioning stars) or just think the seller has their chance and chose to overcharge so leave a low star?

You can leave whatever stars you like, but I would suspect if you accuse anybody of overcharging, they will appeal and win. They have not overcharged, you just do not agree with them making a profit.
Overcharging means quoting one price and then charging a higher one.

I know we disagree but to me it means stating P&P is x and charging x but actually it costs y, when y is much less.

Overcharging, misrepresentation, call it whatever but not profit.

Wher does it say the P and P is at cost?
How much do you think a seller should make on shipping then?

Nothing, they should purely cover their postage and packing costs. Profit should be from the resale price of the product.

I keep asking without any response as I don't feel this thread achieves anything unless we are clear what we are saying in case of newbie sellers reading this.

Are those people suggesting that we sellers can charge what we like also saying that sellers who go on to face restriction due to low stars are somehow mistaken?

By all means charge what you think you can get away with- but are we clear that this can be less than cost effective once it means a restriction, or even a suspension on the selling account?

I think this thread must be very upsetting for all those sellers who have been misled into thinking that p and p doesn't matter- and who now have no account and I would not want a new seller reading this and then feeling aggrieved that they have been misled by people on MSE to think they can charge what they want without consequences.

As a seller I would look at things differently, but you are free to withold your custom.

What would your view be if the seller had to make a 20 mile trip to the post office with the package?

Not having a dig, just interested in your way of thinking.
