No one else is answering me- so can you state categorically then that I can charge what I want for my postage and packaging on ebay and not face any issues with low stars and restriction/suspension?

I keep asking- so all those sellers we have saying they have been restricted due to low stars for p and p are imaging it then are they?

Anyone who is blind should have a helper when using ebay

Everyone else that negs you will be mathematically !!!!!! and so you will get negged

Most normal people add the P&P fees on top of the bid fees to workout how much they need to pay, however remember the bell curve, and in general you are more likely to get people who cant add £8.25 to £275.00,

and i thought you could add P&P details on the product description page?

I don't understand your post- sorry

Are you agreeing that sellers who do charge what they want to cover all their costs in p and p *will* suffer and may well end restricted.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'normal ' people either- as msot will base the stars they leave judging one seller against another.

I think I am getting confused here.

When bidding or buying on Ebay (or any other online retailer) I will look at the price of the item and the delivery charge and base any decision on the total. What the retailer is paying for either is of no interest to me at all.

I would have thought that everybody did the same.

    Unfortunately they don't.

    To sum up then:

The definition of postage and packing differs between:

    A. the legal definition (which is likely to be the highest amount)
    B. the ebay definition (who also have a vested interest in getting the seller to keep the amount as low as possible)
    C. the buyer's perception

I think that is a good summing up. Lets use your example substituting "postage" with "hiring someone to build you a brick wall". At least then we can bang our heads against it if need be! :D
A: Cowboy builder quotes someone £5000 to build them a brick wall. Builder uses reclaimed bricks from an old job he had lying about. Legally he has built a brick wall. And they buyer who agreed the price is happy because they got the wall they wanted at the price they agreed. Result: Builder makes extra profit and the customer is happy, but is taking a big risk that eventually he will do this to someone who knows a about building who will realise what he has done and trash his reputation.
B: Reputable builder charges someone £500 to build them a brick wall. Builder is registered with a professional body and adheres to their guidelines on fairness and uses bricks and cement from a local merchant at a cost of £350. They buyer who agreed the price is happy because they got the wall they wanted at the price they agreed. Result: Builder does a good job and covers his incurred costs. Customer is happy, even those who understand about building will realise that he has other costs to cover and potentially recommend him to others.
C: Reputable builder charges someone £500 to build them a brick wall. Builder is registered with a professional body and adheres to their guidelines on fairness and uses bricks and cement from a local merchant at a cost of £350. They buyer who agreed the price then sees the materials at the local merchant and demands a £150.00 refund as they have been "ripped off". Builder agrees to knock down the wall and refund all money, but "surprisingly" the customer has decided they don't actually want to give up their wall. They just want some of their money back or they will tell everyone he ripped them off! Result: Builder does a good job and covers his incurred costs but risks a damaged reputation. Customer will never be satisfied as they have unrealistic expectations. Those who understand about building will realise that the customer is amusingly naive and thinks they have uncovered a conspiracy regarding the entire building industry. Builder will warn other builders to avoid doing business with this customer as they are "one of those people".
The problem with this thread is that all of the "Customer C's" on this thread are branding all Builders as "Builder A" (who should rightly be lambasted) whereas every seller I have read on this thread seems to be "Builder B".

PS. For the conspiracy theorists, My eBay rating is around 500 and I have been registered since 2001. I have a 100% positive feedback rating with around a 75% Buying - 25% selling ratio which makes me a "buyer", just one who understands how reality works! :D If you wish to check out my feedback and postage prices to ensure that they meet with your "approval", feel free to PM me. (Just promise if you do that you won't ever buy anything from me, ever because I reallllllly couldn't be bothered!) :p

The problem with that is I buy mainly designer clothes, so a specific garment will only be available in one place, not from multiple sellers.

So you can either have your principles or your designer gear.

If you don't like the P&P go without the garment, if you must have the garment but know the P&P is "unreasonable" then you are choosing to support a poor seller in order to own something that isn't an essential.

As this thread proves people have differing opinions, there's no way of stopping it.

If consumers didn't get hacked off, rightly or wrongly, this site wouldn't exist.

No idea why, the problem is that buyers do judge sellers against each other when leaving stars. For everyone like you who will leave 5* regardless of how much p and P you were charged, there will be more that consider the costs and whether they feel they are reasonable based against their experience of other sellers on ebay. Have you never even considered stars when you leave them, or do you just leave 5* with no judgement call at all?

If every buyer left 5* regardless then then none of us sellers here would be worrying about our stars.
