It's around 6 hours to get to H2B family - we're in North East.
We often have weekends away, so it's just classed as that to us. We say something like 'ooooo we're down 2nd weekend in June' or whatever, and leave it at that.
It's not madness to us, but like I said to the OP it clearly matters to her so she should say something. But I was meaning to 'us' it's not unusual - which is what the op was asking.
We have been in a similar situation, H2B's parents got a deal to go to London when we were down and so said they wouldn't be around (it was about 3 weeks before we were due down) and it really didn't bother us. They had a fabulous time and we heard all about it on the phone, I agree it would have been great to see them, but don't be-grudge them taking the deal.
H2B and I love our time away, we don't like to plan or set things in stone so to us we wouldn't mind. Which is what i was trying to say.
In fairness, you're travelling to Cardiff where theres lots to do (its my hometown). We're going to Yorkshire, where there is fook all.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

This is a fairly ignorant comment...0 -

Okay, now I think you are just determined to enjoy getting the most out of being miserable. There's loads to see and do in Yorkshire.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

It's a huge place. Have spoken to DH, who is quite happy to hang around waiting to see whether any of his brothers want to see us. So dragging him off to another part of Yorkshire isn't really on the cards. And looking at things around us it's either shopping or softplay, neither of which are very exciting!!!Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

Yorkshire is huge, are you dismissing all four counties entirely?
Can Cardiff really be that different and so superior to say York, or Leeds? I've never fancied it myself.0 -

It's 40 miles to York from where we're staying. So an hour each way. To do what? The Minster again?
I could list about a hundred fun things to do between my house and Cardiff (about 12 miles/20 minutes). Finding similar things in Yorkshire is proving much harder.
But if people want to suggest things in South Yorkshire I'll look at them. DD is recovering from a very nasty chest infection so don't really want her standing around in the cold and wet.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

Thanks. We've done the wildlife park 4 times in the last year as its near DH's grandparents.
Not sure DD would enjoy a museum, and the forecast for the weekend is dire. The winter gardens look quite good for a visit but probably not all day. I was looking at the Magna science place but the reviews are dreadful and its probably a bit old for DD.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

I bet you won't.
You're intelligent enough to google effectively, but being grumpy is more fun at the moment, I think.
You don't have to go, but its not the whole of Yorkshire's fault that your in-laws don't value your family!0
